![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_running1_2017.jpg)
The Four Winns TS242 is a great family surfboat.### Mission

Four Winns has come out with their first tow series wakeboard/surfing boat, a part of the market they are new to. With Volvo Penta's Forward Drive system, the props are tucked forward of the lower unit, which provides safety for the boarder, increased bite in power and speed, and along with the trim tabs, excellent fine-tuning for the quality of wave for surfing. Designed with space and accommodations to spare for entertaining a group, the TS242 is a watersports boat first and foremost, and should be in consideration for anyone looking for versatility in watersports.

### Key Features

- • StableVee wake/surf hull
- • Four Winns custom trailer
- • Ballast system
- • ZeroOff Speed Control
- • Custom wakeboard tower
- • Board racks
- • Enclosed head Port-a-Potty
- • Swim platform lounge seat
- • Walk-through transom
- • Deep-reach swim ladder

### Overview

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_wakeboard_2017.jpg)
The key to the TS242 is wave creation, as it aims to provide wakeboard and tow-line experiences for the user.

The major point of focus for the TS242 is its Volvo Penta Forward Drive system. This one design feature signals an attention to watersports detail that is reflected throughout the boat. The Forward Drive simultaneously maximizes power while, in tandem with the trim tabs, creating a wave primed for surfing and wakeboarding. The wakeboard tower coming standard is a nice touch as well; given the other attention to watersports, not including it as a matter of course would have stopped short of their mission to provide a best in-class surf boat.

### Features

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_layout_2017.jpg)
Bird’s eye view of the TS242 layout.

**Seating.** The TS242 is rated for 14 people (or 2100 lbs.), and one thing that really stands out is the space. There is versatility built-in to most of the seating, but in any setting, the seating is comfortable and large, and the common space never feels crowded; the seating really is a big part of her appeal.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_upholstery_2017.jpg)
All of the seating on the TS242 comes upholstered with the color matched shark skin textured vinyl.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_lounge_2017.jpg)
The bow seating lounge. Note the bolsters for back resting, the stereo speakers, and stainless steel grab rails.

**Bow seating.** The bow has U-shaped seating area with option for a cushion to cover the footwell and make it into a lounging sunpad. Two forward-facing backrests flank the footwell.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_bow_2017.jpg)
The bow seating.

The TS242 also has a bow swim platform forward of the seating, and although the anchor storage it provides is a convenient addition, it does cut into the legroom in this section. Stainless steel guide-rails are on each gunwale, and a plush bolster, cup holders, and speakers all add to the comfort.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_cockpitseating_2017.jpg)
The cockpit seating area transformed to the aft sunpad seen from starboard; note the aft-facing seat is in the pulled-down position, transitioning to a sunpad.

**Cockpit seating.** The transom seating is U-shaped, but broken by a dedicated transom-walk-through to the stern. This leaves two sections -- one that wraps aft along the transom and butts up to port against the companion seat, and then a shorter bench like seat to starboard behind the captain’s chair.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_seat_2017.jpg)

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_seat3_2017.jpg)
The companion’s seat with its sliding backrest in action.

The companion’s seat does have a nifty feature wherein the seatback can easily slide and tilt along the seat’s surface, allowing for it to face forward or aft with little adjustment.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_seat4_2017.jpg)
The stern aft-facing seat in the “up” position.

**Stern seating.** Facing aft just over the swim platform is a double-wide upholstered seat that shares its backrest with the transom cockpit seating. As a staging area for surfing, wakeboarding, and tubing it provides a convenience -- getting ready to hit the water and engaging the equipment is much easier with this seat right over the swimpad.

The seat-bottom can also be pulled forward, flattening the shared seat-back, creating another sunpad.

**Helm seating.** Both the captain’s chair and companion’s seat are ComfortRide bucket seats with sharkskin texture vinyl. Both come with flip up bolsters. The captain’s chair swivels to watch the action off the stern.

The companion’s seat butts up against -- but are not attached to -- the transom seating section. It does, however, have a feature wherein the seatback can easily slide and tilt along the seat’s surface, allowing for it to face forward or aft with little adjustment.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_dash_2017.jpg)

**The helm.** The dash on the TS242 is intuitive and simple with a layout that emphasizes clarity. The finish is high quality, carbon fiber with hand stitching.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_gauges_2017.jpg)
The fog resistant Four Winns gauges.

The Four Winns gauges are fog resistant and include sterndrive engine warning indicators, speedometer with fuel gauge, tachometer with temperature gauge and oil pressure, and a trim gauge. A depth sounder comes standard as well. The TS242 also comes with the Zero Off GPS speed control technology, which simplifies the act of dialing in and achieving a particular speed. Finally, the trim tabs on the TS242 take some learning to perfect, but allow for fine-tuning the wave created in the wake for watersports.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_trimtabs_2017.jpg)

The steering wheel is comfortable, stylish, and comes with tilt steering standard.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_switches_2017.jpg)
The light-up toggle switches on the dashboard.

The dash also has lockable storage shared with the stereo auxiliary/USB port space.

### Storage

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_storage_2017.jpg)
The bow storage located under the seating. Note the lifted backrest as well as the compartment extends under the starboard console.

**Bow storage.** Typical of boats with the bow seating lounge, storage can be found beneath the seats. The TS242’s, however, are designed with some extra space, expanding to include the lift-up seat-backs and extending all the way under the consoles.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_storage2_2017.jpg)
The bow anchor storage latch with swim platform non-skid surface and telescoping ladder.

Additionally, a latched compartment on the bow swim platform acts as anchor storage, giving the option to keep that wet equipment from the larger bow storage.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_storage3_2017.jpg)
Cooler storage just behind the captain’s chair.

**Cockpit storage.** As is common, the TS242 has storage underneath its seating. Starting with the doublewide seat to starboard, there is space for a removable cooler with a small, triangular compartment filling out the space.

To port under the seating is a more straightforward compartment, and just along the walk-through transom sits another small latched storage compartment.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_locker_2017.jpg)
The in-deck ski locker. Note the rubber mat at the bottom.

Finally, the TS242 has an in-floor ski locker with a hinged lid and gas-assisted piston. It has a molded fiberglass finish and overboard draining. It can fit waterskis, kneeboards, and wakeboards and comes with a rubber mat for lining (as do the other storage compartments).

### Amenities

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_head_2017.jpg)
The enclosed head, just under the passenger’s side console. The forward cutaway section and overhead makes getting in and out much easier.

**Enclosed head.** One of the TS242’s better design features is the fully enclosed head located in the passenger’s side console, which eliminates concerns about having to halt the action and return to the dock when nature calls.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_running_2017.jpg)

### Watersports Features

The TS242 comes standard with a wakeboard tower (hinged for easy lowering) that has tow-line capabilities, speakers attached, as well as board racks for drying and stowing equipment, and a ski mirror for monitoring any participants from the helm.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_tower_2017.jpg)
Close-up of the wakeboard tower; note the board racks in the foreground.

The aft swim platform is one of the largest and lowest-to-the-water in class. The boarding ladder unfolds and submerges deep, making for easier access. The ladder is one of the best we’ve seen in-class, angling intuitively into the water with a wider design. The ski tow is located in the stern as well, offering a second tow-line point along with the wakeboard tower.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_swimplatform_2017.jpg)
The aft swim platform with no aft-facing props and the excellent ladder unfolded and in action.

The TS242’s ballast system provides stability and the boat’s ZeroOff technology is a perfect match for watersports. She also has a ballast system, which has an 2,000-pound capacity. The ballast bags are located in the in-floor locker in the cockpit -- these are a huge part of creating the boat’s wake for watersports.

### Power and Performance

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_running2_2017.jpg)
Close proximity wake surfing in a nearly 3-foot tube carved out by the stern.

**Power options.** Volvo Penta’s Forward Drive system comes standard with the TS242, and offers both 350 and 380 horsepower options.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_prop_2017.jpg)
Wake is caused by sinking the stern and displacing water. Because of the shaft and prop angle of inboard boats, to some degree, they work against the ballast. The FWD drive does not counteract the boat’s ballast in the stern but instead aids it.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_forwarddrive_2017.jpg)
A look at the VP Forward drive on dry land.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_forwarddrive2_2017.jpg)
Forward Drive uses a standard sterndrive mounting configuration with the engine fixed to a standard transom assembly and upper Volvo Penta DPS gear case. The drive rigging and trim actuators are also retained for simplicity and reliability.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_forwarddrive3_2017.jpg)
The VP Forward Drive System in action.

Key to the TS242’s success is it’s wave-creation, and between the Forward Drive system, the boat’s ballast system, ZeroOff control, and 350-hp, the TS242 exhibited an excellent wake. As many wake surfers and wakeboarders know, the size of the wave is often not as important as its shape, and the ballast system gives her the wake it needs for consistent fun for all participants.

![“Four](/sites/default/files/inline-images/fourwinns_ts242_table_2017.jpg)
The removable table shown here attached and ready to use. The table can also be installed in the bow section of the boat, in the footwell.

### Observations

Four Winns’ TS242 has storage and seating comparable to others in its class and excels in the power and maneuverability it offers on a watersports boat. The efficient design offers plenty of space for a large party -- 14 capacity is on the high end compared to TS242’s peers -- and the Forward Drive placing the props 26” forward of where they normally are on a conventional sterndrive improves safety for a boat in which close-by swimming will be a constant. It should be a huge hit for a family looking to play on the water in all modes imaginable.
