ezstandalone.cmd.push(function() { ezstandalone.showAds(103); });### **Captain’s Report by Capt. Mark Kellum**

 ![Greenline 45](/sites/default/files/1.%20Greenline%2045.jpg)

The first impression of the Greenline 45 Fly is a conventional flybridge yacht. However, Greenline’s approach to sustainable yachting creates several functional and design innovations. ![View](/sites/default/files/2.%20Idling.jpg)

The latest model for Greenline, the 45 Fly has a large Bimini over the flybridge and a second Bimini over the forward sun pad. An optional T-top adds additional solar panels.## **Mission**

The Greenline 45 Fly was designed, engineered, and built to provide a sustainable yachting experience with full featured interior spaces for luxurious comfort. Large windows in the salon and galley along with hull side windows and cutouts in the forward bulwark make the interior bright and airy. The flybridge deck is designed for entertaining and provides overhead protection for the aft deck. Overall, the Greenline 45 Fly is devised for extended voyaging and entertaining in style.

 ![Starboard side cruising](/sites/default/files/3.%20Starboard%20side%20cruising.jpg)

The test Greenline 45 Fly was equipped with twin 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels with V-drives.## **Distinguishing Features**

- Two 300-amp solar panels molded into the coach roof that supply power to the battery banks. The solar power management system and 3-kilowatt inverter help eliminate frequent need of shorepower.
- Standard, the Greenline 45 Fly has a walk-in master stateroom and VIP stateroom closets with vanities, hanging lockers, and shelves. The test boat had the guest cabin option that replaces both walk-in closets.

## **Major Features**

- **Hydraulically-Actuated Swim Platform**. The swim platform lowers for water access.
- **Full-Beam Master Stateroom.** The full-beam master stateroom has large hull side windows with opening portlights and a private en-suite head with separate shower.
- **VIP Forward Stateroom.** The forward VIP stateroom has a centerline berth and private access to the day-head with separate shower.
- **Standard Sized Mattress Berths.** The mattresses in the master stateroom are standard king-sized and the VIP stateroom offers a standard queen-sized mattress that allows the owner to use standard fitting sheets and bedding.
- **Full Galley.** The galley is equipped with home-like appliances including a full-size refrigerator/freezer, a conventional oven with microwave and convection, and an induction cooktop.
- **Toy Storage.** Under the aft deck is space for toy storage accessed through the aft deck transom bench seating. Optionally, the transom can open for additional access.
- **Forward Sun Pad.** The forward sun pad has a Bimini top and can convert to side-by-side lounge seating.
- **Large Flybridge Deck.** L-shaped bench seating aft complements the sun pad alongside the port side upper helm.

 ![Upper level layout](/sites/default/files/4.%20Upper%20level%20layout.jpg)

The design of the Greenline 45 Fly places the upper helm on the port side just forward of the stairs from the aft deck. ![Maindeck layout](/sites/default/files/5.%20Maindeck%20layout.jpg)

The main deck on the Greenline 45 Fly has the galley between the aft deck and the salon. This makes entertaining both inside and out easier. ![Stateroom layout](/sites/default/files/6.%20Stateroom%20layout.jpg)

The configuration for the Greenline 45 Fly has walk-in closets for both the master and VIP staterooms and private en-suite head with separate showers. ![Lower level layout](/sites/default/files/7.%20lower%20level%20layout.jpg)

This optional configuration moves the VIP stateroom door forward, allowing access to the forward head from the lower companionway. ![Berthing layout](/sites/default/files/8.%20berthing%20layout.jpg)

The third configuration eliminates the walk-in closets to make a third cabin with either upper and lower single berths or a single double berth (the test boats configuration).## **Design**

 ![Bimini top](/sites/default/files/9.%20Bimini%20top.jpg)

With both Bimini tops lowered, the Greenline 45 Fly takes on a sleeker look.**Optional Propulsion.** The Greenline 45 Fly is available with twin 320-horsepower Yanmar diesels, twin 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels, twin Volvo Penta IPS500 diesels, twin Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels, hybrid propulsion with twin 200-horsepower Volvo Penta D3 diesels or fully electric propulsion with twin 100-kilowatt inboard Torqeedo electric drives.

**Two Separate Hull Designs.** To efficiently and properly support the various propulsion systems performance, Greenline designed two separate hull configurations. A tunnel design that accommodates the shaft driven props and a non-tunnel drive that accommodates the Volvo Penta IPS drives.

## **Performance**

 ![](/sites/default/files/10.%20Cruising.jpg)

The Greenline 45 Fly that was tested featured dual Yanmar 370-horsepower diesels with V-drives and the Greenline 45 Fly prop-tunnel hull design. The Greenline 45 Fly has a length overall of 51’1” (15.57 m) and a beam of 14’11" (4.55 m). With a dry weight of 29,762 lbs. (13,500 kg)), half the fuel capacity, and four people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 31,752 lbs. (14,402 kg).

**Top Speed.** With the dual 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels with V-drives run up to 3750 rpm, the Greenline 45 Fly reached a top speed of 23-knots. With a total of 740-horsepower, Greenline is not going for high-speeds with this setup. They are going for cruising comfort.

**Best Cruise.** Running at 3200 rpm and 18.5-knots the test Greenline 45 Fly has a range of 245.1 nautical miles. This seems to be where the test boat felt most comfortable. To cover more distance, running at 2200 rpm and just under 10-knots stretches the range. At this speed, the 11.3 gph fuel burn provides 0.9 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 313.6 nautical miles. Running the Greenline at 1250 rpm and 6.3-knots the range is a respectable 1118.0 nautical miles.

 ![](/sites/default/files/11.%20Table.JPG)

0 to Plane. The test Greenline 45 Fly reached planning speed in 7.2 seconds.**0 to 20 MPH.** The test Greenline 45 Fly reached 20 mph in an average of 11.3 seconds.

## **Handling**

 ![Calm test conditions](/sites/default/files/12.%20Calm%20test%20conditions.jpg)

At 23-knots, the Greenline 45 Fly’s top speed in calm test conditions, she rode solid as any boat in her class would.A lot of the Greenline 45 Fly’s driving comfort comes from the responsiveness of the helm. At cruise speeds it is even more pronounced, due to more wash against the rudders. The Greenline demonstrated a gentle 9-degree roll into the turns, ensuring nothing will get tossed around.

 ![side door](/sites/default/files/13.%20Side%20door.jpg)

The test captain on the Greenline 45 Fly found the frame for the side door to be a bit too-low. However, the convenience outweighed the distraction.**Close-in Maneuvering.** In low-speed, close-in maneuvering, the Greenline 45 Fly performed as expected for a well-handled yacht. The test captain found that whatever maneuvering was needed the Greenline 45 Fly was able to respond perfectly.

## **Boat Inspection**

 ![Roofline](/sites/default/files/14.%20roofline.jpg)

Exhibiting clean shearline and roofline the Greenline 45 Fly has a stylish feel that seems undated.## **Stern**

The swim platform is the most common way to board a boat of this style. The Greenline 45 Fly has two stairways from the swim platform to the aft deck on the port and starboard side. The transom in between can be optionally equipped to open. There is also an option for a grill, sink, and prep area mounted on the transom. The test boat had the standard, non-opening transom.

 ![Swim platform](/sites/default/files/15.%20Swim%20platform_1.jpg)

The swim platform on the Greenline 45 Fly measures 4’4” (1.32 m) deep by 10’9” (3.28 m) across. ![Lowered swim platform](/sites/default/files/16.%20Lowered%20swim%20platform.jpg)

The swim platform on the Greenline 45 Fly is hydraulically-actuated and lowers for water access and tender retrieval when so equipped. ![Reboardin ladder](/sites/default/files/17.%20Reboarding%20ladder.jpg)

The Greenline 45 Fly has a passerelle that automatically extends from the port side stairway to the aft deck. ![Molded wing step](/sites/default/files/21.%20Molded%20wing%20step.jpg)

Greenline designed in a molded-on wing-step on the 45 Fly to facilitate ease of debarking or embarking.## **Aft Deck**

At the top of the steps leading to the aft deck, there are stainless steel framed safety doors. Across the stern is bench seating aft of a solid-wood table mounted on twin pedestals. With the galley located directly forward of the aft deck inside a glass partition which has an opening window and a flip out counter, there is no-need to have a wet bar on the aft deck.

 ![Aft table](/sites/default/files/22.%20Aft%20table.jpg)

The safety gates have the iconic Greenline dolphins’ cut-outs. The bench seat is 7’ (2.13 m) wide. The table has a center insert that flips over to reveal six drink holders. ![Hardtop](/sites/default/files/23.%20Hardtop.jpg)

The flybridge deck on the Greenline 45 Fly forms a hardtop 6’9” (2.06 m) above the deck with inset lighting and stereo speakers. ![Stainless steel gate](/sites/default/files/24.%20Stainless%20steel%20gate.jpg)

On both aft quarters of the aft deck are heavy-duty, double horned, stainless-steel, bollard-style cleats along with heavy-duty, stainless-steel fairleads. Built into the forward panel is the emergency manual bilge pump operating handle. ![Engine hatch](/sites/default/files/25.%20Engine%20hatch.jpg)

Access to the mechanical space on the Greenline 45 Fly is through a hatch built into the aft deck. ![Bench seat storage](/sites/default/files/26.%20Bench%20seat%20storage.jpg)

A hatch under the aft bench seat provides access to the water toys storage below. ![Reflective partition](/sites/default/files/27.%20Reflective%20partition.jpg)

The reflective glass partition that separates the aft deck from the galley provides a modicum of privacy during the day. ![Aft deck bar](/sites/default/files/28.%20Aft%20deck%20bar.jpg)

There is a bifold glass door to port and a 44” (111.76 cm) wide by 33” (83.82 cm) window that opens easily with a gas-assist strut. The counter folds out to form a convenient aft deck bar.## **Galley**

The galley is strategically located between the aft deck and the salon allowing it to serve two of the main gathering areas. The headroom is 6’7” (2.01 m) with the prep and cooking areas to starboard and the refrigeration and some of the storage on the port side. Traffic fore and aft flows through the middle.

 ![Sink](/sites/default/files/29.%20Sink.jpg)

Built into the Kerrock solid surface countertop is a deep sink with stainless-steel faucet. ![Burners](/sites/default/files/30.%20Burners.jpg)

There is a two-burner cooktop built into the countertop. Note there are fiddles all around the counter to keep things in place. ![Microwave](/sites/default/files/31.%20Microwave.jpg)

Below the cooktop is a built-in microwave and convection oven. ![Cabinet storage](/sites/default/files/32.%20Cabinet%20storage.jpg)

Above the counter, on the starboard side, is cabinet-style storage and shelving. ![Refrigerator ](/sites/default/files/33.%20Refriderator%20freezer.jpg)

Forward of the high bench seat is storage convenient for charts and incidentals.## **Lower Helm**

The lower helm was designed with the operator in mind. Situated on the starboard side with a door leading to the starboard side deck, the operator can stand outside and to gain a better perspective when close-in maneuvering.

 ![Helm](/sites/default/files/39.%20Helm.jpg)

The helm dash measures 3’1” (0.94 m) wide by 11.5” (29.21 cm) high panel. The test boat had a single 12” (30.48 cm) multifunction display. The panel could support at least one more display. The VHF radio is mounted on the inboard side with a separate speaker. Immediately to port of the fixed mount steering wheel is the autopilot. ![Auto pilot](/sites/default/files/40.%20Autopilot.jpg)

Below the autopilot and drink holders are bilge alarms and electrical switching on both sides of the wheel, close to the knee strike zone. ![Throttles](/sites/default/files/41.%20Throttles.jpg)

On the starboard side are the engine displays and the engine start/stops. Further aft is the bow and stern thruster controls, trim tabs with indicator and engine control binnacle. ![Windshield](/sites/default/files/42.%20Windshield.jpg)

The single pane windshield is 9’3” (2.82 m) wide by 3’8” (1.12 m) high. Note the red light above the helm which is used to preserve night vision when operating after dark. ![Double wide helm seat](/sites/default/files/43.%20Double%20wide%20helm%20seat.jpg)

The double wide helm seat has a single bolster for stand-up operation. From the standing position the headroom is 5’8” (1.73 m) and the maximum eye height is no more than 5’ (1.52 m).## **Side Decks**

The side decks are asymmetrical with the port side deck slightly larger, 15” (38.1 cm) wide and the starboard side deck 14” (35.56 cm) wide. The starboard side has a boarding door and a helm door.

 ![Bulwark grab rails](/sites/default/files/44.%20Bulwark%20grab%20rails.jpg)

## **Observations**

The Greenline 45 Fly is exceptionally comfortable and ergonomic, as every space offered has roomy areas to move about. Everything was carefully thought out and designed to accommodate large groups on board in multiple gathering areas. One important consideration, whether at the dock or on the hook, the entire yacht’s electrical system can be run off of the boats 600-amp of battery power, running through an inverter, and recharging through the dual 300-watt solar panels… refrigeration, air conditioning, lighting…. Everything.

The Greenline 45 Fly available in either shaft drive or hybrid drive to run on electric power. And for those who want speed as opposed to efficiency, the Greenline 45 Fly is also available with Volvo Penta IPS drives, so it’s all about choices. The Greenline 45 Fly clearly deliverers for those customers looking to make their boat truly their own.
