 ![Norhavn 60](/sites/default/files/1.%20Nordhavn%2060.jpg)

The Nordhavn N60 is designed to take an owner operator, and the whole family, on extended passages in luxury, comfort, and most importantly, safety. ![Starboard side view](/sites/default/files/2.%20Starboard%20side%20view_1.jpg)

The single 325-horsepower John Deere diesel is efficient and capable of achieving trans-oceanic crossings.## **Mission**

The Nordhavn N60 is built to safely cross oceans with a knowledgeable owner/operator. It is a long-distance trawler with redundant systems to securely take friends and family on adventures anywhere in the world in luxury and comfort. Nordhavn’s extensive experience building these ocean-going vessels shows throughout with well-organized systems and soundly thought-out storage for long-period provisioning.

 ![Flybridge](/sites/default/files/3.%20Flybridge.jpg)

The flybridge gives the operator a commanding view. The large hardtop provides protection from long days in the sun.## **Distinguishing Features**

- **Heavy Build.** Weight is not a consideration therefore Nordhavn built the Nordhavn 60 with the highest quality materials throughout. Everything is overbuilt for reliability and durability.
- **Professional Pilothouse.** The main helm is fully enclosed with a Portuguese bridge. All systems have back up redundancy for safety at sea. There is a separate Captain’s Cabin just abaft of the main helm.

## **Major Features**

- **Single 325-Horsepower John Deere Diesel.** The diesel drives a straight shaft turning a 42 x 31.5 5-bladed bronze prop fitted with line cutters.
- **100-Horsepower John Deere Wing Engine.** The wing engine drives V-drive transmission, turning a Gori collapsible propeller so it’s all independent of the main shaft, fuel, electrical and controls are all redundant from the main engine.
- **Well Thought Out Mechanical Spaces.** There is a small cabin with berth outside the watertight main engine room door. All wiring, plumbing, hydraulic plumbing and systems are clearly labeled.
- **Well Appointed Galley.** Equipped with everything to prepare meals over multiple days for everyone onboard.
- **Forward VIP Stateroom.** Tastefully appointed with satin finished teak cabinetry with cherry and ebony flooring.
- **Master Stateroom.** Well-designed and elegant with teak, cherry and ebony throughout.
- **Boat Deck.** The boat deck above the salon and aft deck hardtop is large enough to accommodate two tenders and includes a gantry davit.
- **Aft Deck.** The aft deck is replete with natural teak decking.

 ![Layout](/sites/default/files/4.%20Layout_0.jpg)

The line-art depicts the overall layout for the Nordhavn 60 that was tested. The owner had Nordhavn customize several details not shown.## **Design**

 ![Bow view](/sites/default/files/5.%20Bow%20view.jpg)

Everything about the Nordhavn 60 is designed for safe long-distance passages in luxury and style. The Nordhavn 60 originated from the Nordhavn 55 stretching the salon and adding exterior space. These modifications were derived from owner input and feedback.

## **Performance**

 ![Open ocean](/sites/default/files/6.%20Open%20ocean.jpg)

The Nordhavn N60 is not built for speed. It is built for safe, steady passage making on most oceans in the world. The Nordhavn N60 has a LOA of 62’6” (19.05 m), a beam of 18’ (5.49 m), and a draft of 6’8" (2.02 m). With an empty weight of 138,000 lbs. (62,596 kg), full fuel, water and three people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 156,905 lbs. (71,171 kg). During the sea trial on the Nordhavn N60, the John Deere engine display was not properly operating, as it was stuck in diagnostic mode, so BoatTEST.com was not able to acquire test results from the main engine.

Nordhavn has done extensive testing on this boat however, and here’s what they report. With the single 325-hp John Deere run up to a max 2200 rpm, the speed topped out at 9.8 knots. Now no one in their right mind would run her at that speed for an expedition passage. The 16 gph fuel burn is almost double that at 1800 rpm while gaining only 1.1 knots. At 1800 rpm and 8.7 knots she burns 8.7 gph, and can keep running for just under 2250 nm. Slower at that point really adds the miles, topping out at 6000nm at 1000 rpm and 5.6 knots. So clearly, this boat is not about speed but distance… distance to cross an ocean.

 ![data chart](/sites/default/files/nordhavn_n60_newchart_20.jpg)

## **Handling**

 ![Bow](/sites/default/files/8.%20Bow.jpg)

Normally when weather moves in during a test, BoatTEST.com captains will correctly seek shelter. With the radar showing weather moving in all around it was not necessary. The Nordhavn N60 remained stable and comfortable through it all.In port showed how nicely maneuverable this yacht is. The test captain utilized the wing control on the Portuguese bridge. Maneuvering into the dock was as uneventful as the departure, with the same process proving successful. Small movements of the engine control to gain a little momentum coupled with bursts from the thrusters.

## **Boat Inspection**

 ![](/sites/default/files/9.%20Nordhavn.jpg)

The lines are classic Nordhavn. However, the additional 5' (1.52 m) give the Nordhavn N60 a sleeker look than the original Nordhavn 50.### **Stern**

The Nordhavn N60 has a full-beam swim platform with safety rails and a well-organized transom.

 ![Swim platform](/sites/default/files/10.%20Swim%20platform.jpg)

The swim platform on the Nordhavn N60 is 4’6” (1.37) deep. The two staple-shaped safety rails on the starboard side can be removed and placed in the receiver on the port side rails. ![Aft cleats](/sites/default/files/11.%20Aft%20cleats.jpg)

There are two 6” (15.24 cm) pull-up cleats located on the port and starboard corners of the platform. Convenient for securing a tender. ![Transom hawesholes](/sites/default/files/12.%20Transom%20hawseholes.jpg)

On the starboard side built into the transom is the shore-power receptacles. One 240-volt receptacle and two 120-volt SmartPort receptacles. ![Grab rails](/sites/default/files/16.%20Grab%20rails.jpg)

The Nordhavn N60 has grab rails on both the port and starboard corners of the transom. ![Cockpit doors](/sites/default/files/17.%20Cockpit%20door.jpg)

Access to the Nordhavn N60’s cockpit is through a heavy-duty pantograph door. The grab rail becomes the door handle. There is only one step up to the cockpit.### **Cockpit**

The cockpit of the Nordhavn N60 measures 14’5” (4.40 m) wide by 10’5” (3.18 m) deep and has 6’11” (2.10 m) of headroom under the full-length hardtop. For oceanic conditions, the bulwarks are 32” (81.30 cm) at the transom and transition to 39” (99.10 cm) forwardmost providing another safety factor. Natural teak graces the test boats cockpit deck.

 ![Aft deck](/sites/default/files/18.%20Aft%20deck.jpg)

Shown is the cockpit with natural teak decking. There is no fixed furniture on the Nordhavn N60. The table and chairs are owner supplied. ![Horn style cleat](/sites/default/files/19.%20Horn%20style%20cleat.jpg)

There are two 7” (17.78 cm) hawseholes with horn-style cleats built onto the hawsehole on the port and starboard bulwarks. Note the deck drain.**Deck Drains.** The Nordhavn N60 is an ocean-going yacht and Nordhavn designed it with strategic deck drains throughout the exterior to quickly remove any seawater that may wash aboard.

 ![Aft grill](/sites/default/files/20.%20Aft%20grill.jpg)

The test Nordhavn N60 had a grab-rail mounted stainless-steel gas grill. Note the two propane tanks secured in the transom locker. ![Rod holders](/sites/default/files/21.%20Rod%20holders.jpg)

The owner also had rod holders installed on the corners of the transom. ![Cockpit refreshment center](/sites/default/files/22.%20Cockpit%20refreshment%20center.jpg)

Molded into the forward bulkhead is the cockpit refreshment center with a sink and counter prep space with storage below. On the port side is a large wet locker that, at the owner’s request, replaced a stairway to the boat deck above. Note the two-diesel fuel fills on the corners (green arrows). ![One side deck](/sites/default/files/23.%20One%20side%20deck.jpg)

There is only one side deck on the starboard side to move forward on the Nordhavn N60.## **Side Deck**

Nordhavn designed the N60 to have only one side deck on the starboard side that leads to a stairway that leads to the Portuguese bridge and pilothouse. The side deck measures 20” (50.8 cm) wide with 38” (96.5 cm) high bulwarks and an overhead of 6’11” (2.11 m).

 ![Midships boarding](/sites/default/files/24.%20Midships%20boarding.jpg)

Along the starboard side deck is a midship boarding door in the bulwark that opens outward. There is an overhead grab rail above the opening. Note the grab rail that continues up the stairs to the Portuguese bridge. ![Deck drains](/sites/default/files/25.%20%20Deck%20drains.jpg)

On the Nordhavn N60, there are three deck drains along the starboard side deck to rapidly remove any seawater that may intrude. Note the hawsehole with horn style cleat. ![Scuppers](/sites/default/files/26.%20Scuppers.jpg)

Along the starboard side of the Nordhavn N60 are scuppers that allow deck drains to function without back flow.## **Portuguese Bridge**

The purpose of the Portuguese bridge is to deflect seawater from the foredeck up protecting the forward windows of the pilothouse. It gives a semi-sheltered area outside the pilothouse while underway. It also provides a "safe area" or handhold when it is necessary to be on the foredeck in inclement weather. In addition, the Nordhavn N60 has a wing helm station on the starboard side which gives a clearer view when backing into a slip.

 ![Portuguese bridge](/sites/default/files/27.%20Portuguese%20bridge.jpg)

The Portuguese bridge provides a semi-sheltered area with storage for lines, fenders or even a drogue. ![Pantograph door](/sites/default/files/28.%20Pantograph%20door.jpg)

The Nordhavn N60's Portuguese bridge has an outward opening pantograph door for easy access to the foredeck. ![Wing controllers](/sites/default/files/29.%20Wing%20controllers.jpg)

Built into the starboard corner of the Portuguese bridge is the wing controls. There is the main engine control binnacle, main engine start/stop switches, bow and stern thruster control, windlass control, and horn switch. ![Windshields](/sites/default/files/30.%20Windshield_0.jpg)

The windshield on the Nordhavn N60 rakes forward and has a 9” (22.86 cm) visor above. Note the heavy-duty windshield wipers.## **Foredeck**

Through the centerline pantograph door is the Portuguese bridge which leads to the foredeck and ground tackle. All the decking on the foredeck is contrast colored non-skid.

 ![Deck hatches](/sites/default/files/31.%20Deck%20hatches.jpg)

As seen throughout the Nordhavn 60, there are strategically placed deck drains on the foredeck (green arrows) to expunge any seawater and rainwater that may come aboard in inclement weather. ![Ground tackle](/sites/default/files/32.%20Ground%20tackle.jpg)

Along the sides of the foredeck, there are safety rails that are 36” (91.44 cm) above the deck. At the ground tackle handling platform, the rails are 27” (68.58 cm). Note the two 14” (45.56 cm) fixed cleats for securing the ground tackle. ![Bow pulpit](/sites/default/files/33.%20Bow%20pulpit.jpg)

A Maxwell hydraulic capstan windlass feeds the bow pulpit mounted bow roller system to deploy and retrieve the ground tackle. Note the waterproof hatch that leads to the ground tackle locker. ![Anchor locker](/sites/default/files/34.%20Anchor%20locker.jpg)

Shown is the inside of the ground tackle locker. Note the main rode on the Nordhavn N60 is all chain. ![Recessed deck](/sites/default/files/35.%20Recessed%20deck.jpg)

Note that the recessed deck between the cabin trunk and outboard bulwark is a practical area to secure fenders when preparing to dock.## **Boat Deck**

The boat deck on the test Nordhavn N60 was modified at the request of the owner. The opening for a stairway and the stairway from the cockpit were both removed, and the boat deck was made to support two tenders. A 14’ (4.26 m) Novurania RIB with a 50-horsepower Yamaha outboard and a 17’ (5.18 m) Twin Vee catamaran with a 60-horsepower Suzuki outboard.

 ![Steps to upper deck](/sites/default/files/36.%20steps%20to%20upper%20deck.jpg)

On the port side there is an upper side deck from the Portuguese bridge that leads to the boat deck. Note the steps that lead to the upper helm. ![Tenders](/sites/default/files/37.%20Tenders.jpg)

Aft between the tenders is a Steelhead Esprit 1,500 lb. (680 kg) davit with an extension of 12’ (3.66 m) allowing launches from either side or aft of the swim platform. Note, directly in front of the Twin Vee center console is a fuel locker with a 40-gallon (151 L) tank and hose with a filling nozzle.## **Upper Helm**

Access to the flying bridge is via a set of stairs from the boat deck. When the weather is clement, the upper helm gives an impressive panoramic view.

On the port side of the VIP stateroom is more storage and an additional hatch on the shelf (not shown).## **Mechanical Spaces**

Aside from Nordhavn’s reputation for incredibly strong and solid built vessels and beautifully appointed interiors, it is the mechanical spaces and redundant systems that truly set Nordhavn apart. Access to the main engine room is through a hatch in the cockpit, or from the companionway stairs adjacent to the galley.

 ![Stairway storage](/sites/default/files/95.%20Stairway%20storage.jpg)

There is storage in the stairway leading down to the mechanical spaces. Note the courtesy lights. ![Crew space](/sites/default/files/96.%20Crew%20space.jpg)

At the base of the stairs is a crew space with a stainless-steel sink and granite countertop. There is 6’1” (1.85 m) of headroom. ![Crew berth](/sites/default/files/97.%20Crew%20berth.jpg)

A built-in single berth is on the port side with more storage below. On the aft bulkhead is the watertight door. ![Washer and dryer](/sites/default/files/98.%20Washer%20and%20dryer.jpg)

There is a full-size washer and dryer behind the cabinets built into the forward bulkhead.## **Main Engine Room**

Headroom at the entrance of the main engine room is 5’7” (1.70 m), there is light gray FRP with nonskid deck ramps upward moving aft dropping the headroom to 4’8” (1.42m). The engine room was surgically clean. The space is cooled with Dayton blowers and intakes.

 ![Engine room](/sites/default/files/99.%20engine%20room.jpg)

The owner of this Nordhavn N60 opted for a single engine 325-horsepower John Deere diesel. There is stainless-steel railing surrounding the engine, making engine checks in a seaway safer. ![Engine cooler](/sites/default/files/100.%20Engine%20cooler.jpg)

The main diesel is cooled by a keel cooler heat exchanger therefore has a dry exhaust running up through the top of the on-deck stack so there’s no raw water running through the engine. At the bend, there’s a drain valve in the exhaust to drain off condensate water if the boat has been idle for a period of time.**Exhaust Support Hangers.** All supports are mounted to isolation mounts and the entire exhaust is wrapped in custom insulation blankets. Green arrow above points to one isolator.

 ![Shaft space](/sites/default/files/101.%20Shaft%20space.jpg)

The main engine drives a straight shaft turning a 42 x 31.5 5-bladed bronze prop fitted with line cutters. There’s a PSS shaft seal with raw water cooling from a dedicated thru hull.**Fuel Tank System.** There are four main tanks with sight gauges, two in this compartment, all totaling 2,250 gallons (8,517 L). Each has a dedicated fill point on deck. There is one centerline aluminum "Day Tank" protected by stainless rails, at 31 gallons (117 L) which will gravity feed from the other four tanks.

 ![Tank](/sites/default/files/102.%20tank.jpg)

The top part of this day tank holds approximately two 2-gallons (7.57 L) and it’s fitted with a sight gauge. The bottom part of reservoir holds 29-gallons (110 L) fitted with a drain at the bottom for water purging and it includes a water sensor. There is an illuminating light in pilothouse if water is present. Note one of the main tank’s sight gauge on the right. ![Manifold system](/sites/default/files/103.%20Manifold%20system.jpg)

For directing the flow, there’s a very elaborate and well labeled manifold system. ![Fire system](/sites/default/files/104.%20Seafire%20fire%20system.jpg)

On the starboard side is the wing engine with separate shaft driven by a ZF 2.477:1 V-drive transmission turning a Gori collapsible propeller. Completely redundant from the main engine. The engine room is protected by a SEAFIRE fire system with a relay box to shut down the engine, generator, and blowers. ![Emergency manual bildge](/sites/default/files/105.%20Emergency%20manual%20bilge.jpg)

Abaft of the wing engine is an emergency manual bilge pump accessible from the salon through a deck hatch. Note the handle mounted on the bulkhead behind the pump. ![Port side hydraulics](/sites/default/files/106.%20Port%20side%20hydraulics.jpg)

To the port side is all hydraulics, with the main tank located aft and separate systems all laid out just ahead for the two thrusters, the stabilizing fins, the anchor windlass, and emergency bilge pump and a hydraulic 180 gpm pump for the anchor washdown.

 ![Generator](/sites/default/files/107.%20Generator.jpg)

On the port side across from the wing engine is the 20 kW Northern Lights generator. One of two generators. ![Stabilizer](/sites/default/files/108.%20Stabilizer%20controler.jpg)

The Trac stabilizer control module is located on the forward bulkhead on the starboard side.## **Lazarette**

Aft of the main engine room there is another watertight door leading to another mechanical space. The overhead clearance varies from 3’8” (1.12 m) to 4’ (1.22 m). Access to the lazarette space is also through a hatch in the cockpit deck.

 ![Watertight door](/sites/default/files/109.%20Watertight%20door.jpg)

The watertight door to the lazarette measures 22” (55.88 cm) by 31” (78.74 cm) and the door is 2” (5.08 cm) thick. ![Battery switches](/sites/default/files/110.%20Battery%20switches.jpg)

Mounted on the lazarette’s forward bulkhead is the battery connection and switches. All the connections are readily accessible. ![Air chiller systems](/sites/default/files/111.%20Air%20chiller%20systems.jpg)

To starboard are the air chiller systems. There are 10 D type house batteries.**House Battery System.** The 10 D-type house batteries are connected to two inverters that supply house power. The Nordhavn N60 can run all electrical systems from the house batteries without the generators including air conditioning, washer, dryer, refrigerators, etc. When the batteries are at half charge, the generator in the lazarette automatically starts to recharge the batteries.

 ![Battery system inverters](/sites/default/files/112.%20Battery%20system%20inverters.jpg)

Shown is the inverters for the house battery system. Note, the owner has used this space for personal gear stowage. ![Generator](/sites/default/files/113.%20Generator.jpg)

The second 12 kW Northern Lights generator is mounted on the centerline in the lazarette. ![Steering rams](/sites/default/files/114.%20Steering%20rams.jpg)

There is portside access to the steering rams with an emergency steering tiller stowed nearby. Below the hull is a 2.75” (6.98 cm) thick rudder with a 3/8” (95 cm) stainless backbone plate with tightening holes sheathed in FRP and foam.## **Pump Room**

Forward of the main engine room, under and accessible from the forward VIP stateroom is a third mechanical space.

 ![Mechanical space](/sites/default/files/115.%20Mechanical%20space.jpg)

Access to the third mechanical space, the pump room, is through a hatch in the VIP stateroom companionway. ![Water heater](/sites/default/files/116.%20Water%20heater.jpg)

Directly below is the Dometic water maker and water heater with a water pump just forward. ![Hydraulic expansion tank](/sites/default/files/117.%20hydraulic%20expansion%20tank.jpg)

Looking forward there is the hot water manifold on the forward bulkhead, the cold-water manifold is on the aft bulkhead (not shown). Port and starboard are sanitation pumps. Further forward is the hydraulics for the bow thruster, an expansion tank and mounted on the bulkhead is the breaker for the anchor and rode washdown system.## **Options to Consider**

Nordhavn is a customer centric organization. Most of their boat buyers are experienced operators and are in the market for an expedition yacht that is built to their expectations. Essentially, each Nordhavn is built to its original owners needs and considerations. As seen on the test boat, everything is an option for the owner to dictate what is their preference.

## **Price**

Pricing Range: TBD

Prices, features, designs, and equipment are subject to customer specifications.

## **Observations**

Nordhavn has a reputation for building luxury expedition yachts without compromise. With a history of dozens of customers experiencing circumnavigations in these yachts, one having done three circumnavigations in a row. The Nordhavn 60 has expanded on the immensely popular Nordhavn 55 with more space in the salon and exterior while generating a sleeker look all while maintaining true oceanic capabilities.

The Nordhavn 60 should prove to be popular for the job they’re designed for. More importantly, owners deal with the builder through the life of the vessel. Probably the only thing better than the support the company provides, is the close-knit fraternity of owners who are quick to share experiences and advice on any topic Nordhavn. The experience truly never ends.
