![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 has a versatile layout useful for dayboating and overnights.

## Mission

The mission of the Schaefer 400 is to gather family and friends for good times on the water, be it with a larger group for day-boating adventures, or a smaller group for overnighting. This is an express cruiser coupe with a main deck open all the way from the helm station to the swim platform. With a large group on board, everyone will be able to sit together while the boat is running, filling the seating areas of the main deck, helm station, and companion seating. A pair of staterooms, each at either end of the belowdecks salon, and each with its own head, ensure that the owner and guests will enjoy privacy.

## Distinguishing Features

• **The main-deck seating area** consists of a large, curving U-shaped settee with an additional curved settee opposite.

• **Finely lacquered marine-grade wood** used throughout for a clean, finished look that stands up to fingertip inspection.

• **A deep cooler and bottle bar** with custom stemware are ready to entertain.

• **A custom owner logo treatment** ranges from the insignia appearing in key spots on the main deck, belowdecks, and in the master stateroom. This is personalization as we have never seen it before.

### Layout

![Schaefer Yachts 400](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_layout_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 has a main deck centered on an aft seating area that’s convenient both to the helm and a swim platform with grilling station.

## Features Inspection

### Swim Platform

The Schaefer 400 features a swim platform that is 5’8” (1.73 m) long, with an aft 3’6” (1.07 m) long section that can be lowered hydraulically beneath the water.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 swim platform](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_swimplatform_2019.jpg)
The swim platform on the Schaefer 400 serves as a teak beach for bathers.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 swim platform](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_swimplatform2_2019.jpg)
The swim platform has receivers for a cradle for a PWC or tender.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 ladder](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_ladder_2019.jpg)
A four-step telescoping stainless steel reboarding ladder is positioned in a recess concealed beneath a hatch, but it can be deployed by someone in the water by simply sliding it aft.

**One operational aspect of the swim platform:** The engine ignitions must be turned on to lower the platform, since that first step also lowers the sterndrives.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 swim water](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_swimwater_2019.jpg)
Swimmers will find it easier to climb aboard with the swim platform lowered below the surface.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 platform deployed](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_platformdeployed_2019.jpg)
These stairs deploy automatically as the platform lowers, making it easier to step from the lowered section to the fixed platform.

### Transom Console

Designed to be accessed from the swim platform, the transom console has a wide grab handle to help the crew keep their balance on the platform. There’s also stowage in lockers underneath.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 transom](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_transom_2019.jpg)
The transom console is positioned to make the most of the swim platform deck space.

**Concealed beneath a hinged lid** is an outdoor food-prep station with a grill and sink with folding faucet. The lid has a stainless steel backsplash to guard against heat damage, and is held up by gas-assist struts at either end.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 grill](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_grill_2019.jpg)
The transom console lets the chef be part of the conversation of the aft deck social area while also being out of the way.

### Stairs to the Side Decks

Stairs from the swim platform to each side deck have courtesy lights. Nearby 10” (25.4 cm) cleats for docklines may also serve as a grabrail in a pinch. The fuel fills are also here.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 courtesy lights](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_lights_2019.jpg)
Courtesy lights are a good safety feature on the stairs to the side deck.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 stairs](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_stairs_2019.jpg)
The starboard stairs have fuel cutoffs for the engines behind a clear acrylic door on the bulwark.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 starboard stairs](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_stairs2_2019.jpg)
The starboard stairs also have a shower for bathers in a recess in the bulwark.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 gate](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_gate_2019.jpg)
From the stairs to the port side deck, the gate to access the main deck is just inboard.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 recess](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_recess_2019.jpg)
A recess in the aft bulwark adjacent to the port side-deck stairs has the shore power connection.

### Side Decks

Useful grabrails on the aft end of the hardtop make it easy to step up onto the side decks with confidence. The side decks are 16” (40.64 cm) wide between the house side and the rail that’s 20” (50.8 cm) tall alongside the house.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 grab rail](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_grabrail_2019.jpg)
Our test captain appreciated this grabrail, which was well positioned to ease the transition to the side deck.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 side decks](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_sidedecks_2019.jpg)
The side decks on the Schaefer 400 make it easy to move fore and aft.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 grab rails](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_grabrails3_2019.jpg)
There are grabrails along either side of the hardtop as well.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 hard top](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_hardtop_2019.jpg)
From the side deck, it’s possible to inspect the hardtop’s aft arch with a navigation light flanked by the VHF antenna and horn.

### Foredeck

The foredeck is surrounded by a bowrail that’s 28” (71.12 cm) high. The sun pad measures 73” (184.5 cm) long and is 84” (213.4 cm) wide at the head and 51” (129.5 cm) wide at the foot.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 sun pad](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_sunpad2_2019.jpg)
The sun pad has 21 ½” (54.61 cm) long grabrails to both sides, while round hatches admit light and ventilation belowdecks.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 cup holders](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_cupholders_2019.jpg)
Acrylic inserts have cutouts that serve as beverage holders.

**To manage the ground tackle**, a windlass is concealed under a hatch and has a chain stopper, a washdown, access to the chain locker, with rugged cleats to secure the chain, and room to stow a fender. There’s even a light for tending ground tackle in low-light conditions. Foot control switches are on the deck to starboard, near one of two 10” (25.4 cm) bow cleats.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 bow](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_bow_2019.jpg)
The bow has a clean look thanks to a hatch concealing the windlass installation.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 ground tackle](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_groundtackle_2019.jpg)
Everything one needs to manage the ground tackle is handy beneath the hatch.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 windlass](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_windlass_2019.jpg)
The light will help the crew see what’s going on with the windlass in low-light conditions.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 chain locker](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_chainlocker_2019.jpg)
There’s decent access to the chain locker.

### Aft Deck

Back on the swim platform, the stainless steel gate has a latching mechanism where the whole gate is lifted to open it. Pass through the gate to get to the main deck social area.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 gate](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_gate2_2019.jpg)
To get on the aft deck, this stainless gate is opened by lifting and swinging it aft.

**A large social area** is the centerpiece of the aft deck. A rounded, U-shaped settee to starboard has room for plenty of guests. A folding teak table, manufactured by Schaefer in-house, is on a fixed pedestal, and there’s another curving settee to port so even more friends can join the party.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 aft deck](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_aftdeck_2019.jpg)
Much of the social area is under the shelter of the hardtop.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 settee](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_settee_2019.jpg)
The port-side settee means up to three more friends can join the party.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 table](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_foldingtable_2019.jpg)
The folding table is on a robust single fixed pedestal. When folded, the exposed grab handle is helpful for a person climbing out of the engine room hatch in the aft-deck sole.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 bimini](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_foldingbimini_2019.jpg)
A folding Bimini is affixed to the aft end of the hardtop, but it blends in with the profile.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 deployed bimini](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_bimini_2019.jpg)
The Bimini is deployed with a manual crank.

### The Main Deck

Forward is another area consisting of the helm station and divan opposite, providing companion seating. The hardtop over this section has a sunroof that opens wide to the sky and provides fresh air. There’s 6’5” (1.95 m) of headroom on the main deck, and the sunroof that measures 6’3” (1.91 m) wide by 6’1” (1.85 m) long opens up the whole helm area and forward part of the main deck to the sky.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 led lights](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_ledlights_2019.jpg)
LED lights along the overhead edges provide illumination.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 sun roof](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_sunroof_2019.jpg)
The sunroof changes the whole feel of the boat on pleasant days.

**A Note About Sunroof Safety:** The sunroof on the Schaefer 400 opens and closes quickly, so the builder added an “electric eye” safety stop forward. If the sunroof is closing and the system detects an obstacle, say a hand or head sticking out, the system stops the sunroof.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 sun roof](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_sunroof2_2019.jpg)
Note the fittings on the sunroof frame at either side as we tested the safety system.

**On our test boat**, just ahead of the aft seating area was a clever shelf with all-around rails. Next to that is a shelf with an acrylic insert for bottle stowage with a rail around it that doubles as a grab handle.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 shelf](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_shelf_2019.jpg)
This shelf really adds to the finished feel of the 400 with the varnished teak surface and the rail that makes it useful.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 stemware](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_stemware_2019.jpg)
Beneath is a locker behind an acrylic door with stowage for custom stemware supplied by Schaefer.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 bottle holder](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_bottleholder_2019.jpg)
This acrylic insert will keep bottles from rattling around, but is unobtrusive when empty.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 trash receptacle](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_trash_2019.jpg)
A trash receptacle is built in to the side of the molded console on which the helm seat is mounted.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 battery switches](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_battery_2019.jpg)
Battery switches are behind a clear acrylic door on the lower panel of the settee opposite the helm.

**A built-in insulated cooler** on our test boat was deep enough to stow plenty of cold drinks. This cooler can be ordered with a chiller plate installed or be replaced with a front-opening refrigerator or freezer.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 cooler](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_cooler_2019.jpg)
The cooler is handy to both forward and aft sections of the main deck, and has a rail that doubles as a grab handle so guests can move about comfortably.

![Schaefer Yachts 400](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_cooler2_2019.jpg)
The cooler is deep and can hold lots of ice and cold beverages.

A settee is positioned forward of the cooler box and is well situated to serve as companion seating opposite the helm station, with a recess in the seatback for stowage.

**A note about customization:** The owner of the Schaefer 400 we tested had requested that a customized logo for the boat be used, and Schaefer placed it on the front of the cooler box console and the companionway door, and we noticed it repeated elsewhere throughout the boat.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 lounge](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_loungestorage_2019.jpg)
A recessed stowage bin with an acrylic fiddle improves the utility of this lounge. Note the angled seatback on its forward end.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 upholstery](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_upholstery_2019.jpg)
Schaefer’s upholstery really shines here with a mix of inviting textures, diamond-pattern stitching, a dimpled vinyl, and Ultraleather on the window frame.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 logo](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_logo_2019.jpg)
The custom logo is just one way Schaefer can personalize a boat, but the company encourages ideas for other custom features as well.

### Helm Station

The helm station is positioned just to starboard of the centerline. It’s a raised helm, a 12” (30.48 cm) step up to a teak deck with a teak-finished, angled footrest. On that platform, standing headroom is 5’7” (170.2 cm) and headroom above the seat is 3’11” (119.4 cm).

![Schaefer Yachts 400 helm pod](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_helm_2019.jpg)
The helm pod is trimmed in leather and has a lacquer panel on the dashboard.

**The helm console** is well laid out with a compass on top that lines up with the steering wheel. Above the wheel is a 9” (22.86 cm) Raymarine Axiom multifunction display, flanked by tachometers, oil pressure gauges, temperature gauges, voltmeters, and trim gauges, as well as the Volvo Penta engine monitors. Electrical switches are on the port side of the leather dash with stereo control.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 gauges](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_gauges_2019.jpg)
Gauges and instruments are spaced out for a tidy look, as are switches and controls on the lower helm panels.

**To starboard of the wheel** are trim-tab controls, engine ignition, electrical switches, and the VHF well out of the way of the helmsman’s knee.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 wheel](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_wheel_2019.jpg)
The wheel is on a tilt base.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 joy stick](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_joystick_2019.jpg)
Positioned to starboard of the helm is the Volvo Penta sterndrive joystick and the electronic engine throttle and shift binnacle.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 helm leather](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_helmleather_2019.jpg)
Outboard is a flat section of the helm leather that would be good for a pair of binoculars or sunglasses, handy but out of the way, but we’d like to see a small rail to help keep things in place.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 windshield](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_windshield_2019.jpg)
The windshield is a single pane measuring 39” (99.06 cm) high and 83” (210.8 cm) wide and is served by one single-speed wiper, but it clears a broad swath.

**The helm seat** is double wide with custom stitching and a thick, flip-up bolster finished with dimpled vinyl.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 helm seat](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_helmseat_2019.jpg)

![Schaefer Yachts 400 helm](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_helmplatform_2019.jpg)
The helm is on a raised platform that’s finished with teak and has an angled, integrated footrest.

**A Note About Driving Position.** Many boaters enjoy the option of sitting or standing while driving. The Schaefer 400 offers those options, but in a slightly different way.

![Schaefer Yachts 400](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_helm2_2019.jpg)
The helm is designed to be used in the seated position when the sunroof is closed…

![Schaefer Yachts 400](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_sunroofopen_2019.jpg)
…But with the sunroof open, the tilt wheel, binnacle position, and flip-up bolster enable the helmsman to drive with his head out the top.

### Belowdecks

A sliding acrylic door opens to the lower deck. There’s a four-step companionway down and the space has 6’6” (1.98 m) of headroom.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 lounge](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_decklayout_2019.jpg)

### Guest Stateroom

The door to the guest stateroom is located to starboard of the salon entertainment console and measures 5’2” (157.5 cm) tall and 2’8” (81.28 cm) wide. Inside, a pair of berths are situated athwartships and measure 76” (193 cm) long and 25” (63.5 cm) wide with 28” (71.12 cm) of headroom over the berths. The overhead in the sleeping area is 41” (104.1 cm) above the deck.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 guest stateroom](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_gueststateroom_2019.jpg)
From the vestibule area, the varying-height geometry of the overhead means the guest stateroom berths are of the crawl-in variety.

**A filler cushion** can turn the twin berths into one wide berth, and there are large hullside windows at each end of the room for natural light. A lacquered door leads to the guest head.

## Performance Test

The Schaefer 400 has a LOA of 40’2” (12.24 m) and a beam of 12’8” (3.86 m). With an empty weight of 20,944 lbs. (9,500 kg), 50% fuel and five people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 23,187 lb. (10,517 kg).

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running2_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 offers exciting performance with sterndrive power.

**With the twin Volvo Penta D4-300 matched to DPH Duoprop sterndrives** powering our test boat, we reached a top speed of 34.3 knots or 39.5 mph (63.5 kph) at 3500 rpm. Best economic cruise came in at 3000 rpm and 27.2 knots or 31.3 mph (50.3 kph). It was at that speed that the 22.0 gph (83.3 lph) fuel burn translated into 1.2 nmpg (0.60 kpl) and a range of 234.6 nm.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running3_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 cuts a sleek profile and her performance matches it.

### Acceleration

From a standing start, the Schaefer 400 got onto plane in 5.9 seconds and accelerated from zero to 20 mph in 7.7 seconds. She went from zero to 30 mph in 15.0 seconds. During hard acceleration she did not exhibit excessive bow rise, and the trim could be easily controlled from the helm with both the sterndrive trim and the electric trim tabs.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running4_2019.jpg)
She climbed out of the hole quickly and her trim tabs helped level her running attitude.

**Sea conditions** were calm on our test. The hull design features a transom deadrise of 17.4-degrees, with a hull shape that gets progressively sharper moving forward. We ran through some wakes from our camera boat and saw she had excellent penetration through the waves, with the strakes extending forward to the bow and knocking down spray.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running5_2019.jpg)
She cut through the wake, losing a little speed but with very little bow rise.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running6_2019.jpg)
The wakes were easy for the boat to handle as she swerved in and out, taking the waves from each side.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running7_2019.jpg)
As she slices through the wake, the spray is pushed away.

**This boat runs and steers well** if trimmed to capitalize on that bow design, so we used the trim control offered by both the sterndrives and the Lenco trim tabs to dial in her attitude for the easy conditions.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 forefoot](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_forefoot_2019.jpg)
As the sharp forefoot is engaged, it’s easy to see how the strakes forward knock down the spray successively, each one pushing the remaining spray down and away.

### Maneuvering

As we put the 400 through some turns, she exhibited a comforting inward lean that is sure to inspire confidence.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 turns](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_turns_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 dug her shoulder into turns.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 running](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running8_2019.jpg)
The boat was responsive to the wheel, thanks in part to Volvo Penta Duoprop DPH sterndrives.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 turns](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_turns2_2019.jpg)
She lowers her shoulder as she enters a sharper turn.

### Docking

Using the Volvo Penta sterndrive joystick for docking, we were able to maneuver her side-to and place her gently against the sea wall where she could be tied up.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 docking](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_docking_2019.jpg)
Bringing the Schaefer up against the sea wall was a simple maneuver.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 joy stick](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_joystick2_2019.jpg)
Our test captain looked out the side window as he manipulated the joystick.

![Schaefer Yachts 400 docking](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_docking2_2019.jpg)
As the boat edged closer, the joystick had control of the proportional thrust to ease her in.

## Price

Base price for the Schaefer 400 with twin 300-hp Volvo Penta D4 diesels linked to DuoProp DPH sterndrives is $553,529.

![Schaefer Yachts 400](/sites/default/files/inline-images/schaefer_400_running9_2019.jpg)
The Schaefer 400 has an extensive options list that combines well with the builder’s willingness to customize.

## Observations

Express cruisers perform the 80/20 role for many boat builders, where the large majority of time spent aboard is dayboating, but the boat is large enough that it also carries room for overnighting with the trappings of accommodations, including a complete head (or two), a galley, and private lounging space. The Schaefer 400 embraces each of these roles with aplomb, with a main deck built for enjoying a day on the water, right down to her expansive sunroof, which opens the forward end of the main deck. A foredeck adds true sun pad space and combines with the optional hydraulic swim platform to expand the utility of the entire boat by not requiring open space on the aft deck for bathers and sun worshipers.
