    Captain's Report

ALUMACRAFT PRO 175By Captain John B. WenzNo doubt about it, the Pro 175 from Alumacraft is all about tournament fishing. It’s one of over 80 different models of specialty fishing boats built by one of the oldest names in Aluminum boat building. After all, this company’s history goes back to 1893, and they built their first 12-foot aluminum row boat in 1946. I recently had the opportunity to take a look at their latest, the Pro 175. Bow FeaturesUp on the bow there’s a 12 volt power point, a trolling motor outlet, a navigation light switch, and an engine trim control. Sit up in the upholstered seat on the forward casting platform and you’ll find two big storage lockers and a 23 gallon aerated livewell at your feet. With bait and tackle close at hand, you won’t miss any of the action when things heat up! The running lights are conveniently stowed so that they’re out of the way most of the time, yet within easy reach when you need them. The combination light for up forward fits into a socket on the bow and stows suitably just forward of the steering console. The all-around white navigation light is stowed at the port rail when it’s not in use in the socket back aft. A seven-foot locking rod storage compartment is located amidships along the port gunnel. Inside you’ll find four sets of rod holders to keep your best gear from getting knocked around. The fiberglass helm console is to starboard and is topped by an attractive windscreen. Engine controls are within easy reach and the instrument package includes speedometer, tachometer, voltmeter, and fuel gauge. No feedback steering is standard and it works real well.Seating & MoreFor running out to where the fish are, you’ll find three fold-down upholstered bucket seats stretched across the beam, over the top of a large dry locker. Two beverage holders are conveniently placed in the back of the center seat and are accessible when the seat back’s folded down. Of course there are fishing chairs for both fore and aft casting platforms. They can be set at either deck level or up on pedestals in a few seconds. The aft casting platform is set-up with a couple of storage lockers outboard, surrounding a 23 gallon aerated livewell. It’s right at your feet, so like the forward position, you won’t have to miss a thing when the action’s hot.Just forward of the motor well is a deck hatch which provides access to the fuel tank, battery, and a 500 gallon-per-hour bilge pump, which is standard equipment. SpecificationsThe Alumacraft Pro 175 measures 17’5” in overall length and has a maximum beam of 88”. The side height is 23” and the transom measures 22” high. The 175 is rated by the NMMA to carry 4 persons or 1200 pounds, and she carries 16 gallons of fuel for an outboard motor rated at up to 90 horsepower. Floors and decks are welded-in, her electrical system is saltwater resistant, and her construction meets or exceeds NMMA standards. The Pro 175 has internal floatation which exceeds US Coast Guard requirements and she’s available in four different color schemes. Available options include a Minn Kota trolling motor and a Lowrance LCD fishfinder. PerformanceI found this boat and motor combination to be really sweet when I got it out on Lake Lanier, Georgia. As comfortable as the ride seems to be, I can confidently say that the Alumacraft Pro 175 can only elevate your fishing game and bring out the competitor in anybody lucky enough to get a ride on her.
