Baja 442 (Not in Production)

3 x 415-hp MerCruiser 502 MPI (Bravo I)

Brief Summary

The Baja 442 is a high performance machine with luxury accommodations below. With her low profile lines the 442 is a sleek boat that’s a lot bigger than you’d suspect. She is designed for high-speed cruising or poker runs, and with triple engines she’s guaranteed to fly.

Key Features

At the helm the Faria gauges are big and backlit so they’re easy to read. The helm and bolster seats are by McLeod, with electric drop-down seat bottoms. In the cockpit a rear bench is standard, but you can opt for a U-shaped lounge as well as a wet bar. Down in the cabin there are two sofas that extend electrically, to form one big double berth. The galley comes equipped with a refrigerator, sink, microwave and concealed stove. There’s also a fully enclosed head with shower.

Captain's Report

The Baja fleet has a new queen: the triple-engine 442. You can, of course, order the Baja 442 with twin engines, but where would be the fun in that?

There’s plenty of room for triple motors in the engine compartment, and you still have good access to work on them. The motor mounts are heavy-duty aluminum. Our test boat had MerCruiser 454 MPIs, but a wide range of stern drives are available, up to triple 500 Bulldogs.

It’s a classic deep-V performance boat with a sharp entry and 24 degrees of deadrise at the transom. This helps it knife through offshore seas without getting skittish at high speeds. But rather than the standard eight-foot beam, it has a wider nine-foot- six-inch beam, allowing room for the luxury accommodations below.

Out on our test track, the triple 385-hp MerCruisers give the 442 a cruise speed of 39.4 mph at 3000 rpm, and a top end of 66.9 mph at 5000 rpm. The decibel level is pretty good thanks to the Captain’s call exhaust and the swim platform which helps deflect the exhaust downward. At best cruise she’ll run for about 257 miles, which should be plenty for your next poker run.
