Chris-Craft Launch 28 Line Drawing

Captain's Report

Chris-Craft Launch 28
Legendary boat builder Chris-Craft is fulfilling the needs of a special few with their new Launch 28. The 28 is the flagship of the Launch series of retro-styled runabout pleasure craft. She boasts a healthy 10-foot beam, an open bow and enough amenities to entertain on the water all day. The Launch 28 brings back style and class that has not been seen on the water in decades.
You may find similar vessels tooling around the ports of the Mediterranean, but nothing compares to the quality and technology of today’s Launch 28. Lets not forget that boats like Italy’s Riva, captured Chris-Craft designs from the early part of the century and continue to produce similar vessels with great success. As you approach this vessel at the dock, the striking, curvaceous lines and ample beam invite you to take a spin. Boarding her is easy, thanks to the teak boarding steps located amid ship. These clever steps double as storage cabinets for small goods. In the cockpit, a teak sole greets you, while the plush wrap-around bow seating entices you to sit and relax and let someone else be captain. The off-white upholstery is complimented by the recessed stainless steel grab handles and flip down padded drink holders. All the way forward, you will find a deep anchor locker and a polished stainless steel running light housing. With room for up to five people, the bow seating area can be converted into a dinning area with the optional table installed. Conveniently located forward of the helm station, is the head. There is generous room in the head as well as a VacuFlush toilet and a vanity with sink. The aft seating in the cockpit, incorporates a chase lounge to port, and is the perfect place to entertain. Just aft of the captain’s chair, is a wet bar with sink, refrigerator, storage cabinets, and significant counter space for snack preparation. Ample storage can be found throughout this boat, and all are lined with high-grade carpet. Particulars like this not only show Chris-Craft’s attention to detail, but their commitment to quality as well.As we move forward through the cockpit to the helm, we find a captains chair wide enough for two to enjoy the ride. The nostalgic dash panel and gauges remind me of the golden age of aviation. Multi function gauges simplify the instrumentation panel. While a soft vinyl steering wheel, gives the look of steel but provides good grip and an important measure of safety. Propelling this artful piece of marine technology, are several choices of sterndrive power. In gasoline form, you can choose from either Volvo-Penta or MerCruiser, while diesel power is supplied from the popular Yanmar brand. Typically the Launch 28 is delivered with a twin-engine configuration, but can be ordered with only a single engine if you so desire. Underway, the first thing I noticed was the quiet engines and smooth ride. The use of sound deadening materials has truly paid off, giving the boat a relaxing tone and setting the mood for whatever the water may deliver that day. Our test boat was equipped with a pair of Volvo-Penta 5.7L Gxi gasoline engines, supplying 280-horse power each. Throttling up, the 28 got on plane with the effort of a much smaller and lighter craft. Cruising through the power band and performing slalom turns, the boat delivered a velvety smoothness to all maneuvers. Proving once again that the new Chris-Craft is in a class all by itself.By Captain Ron SvobodaTest Captain
