Brief Summary

Visitors to south Florida boat shows are often greeted by large, beautiful boats that are not in the mainstream. These are invariably boats built by entrepreneurs and boat lovers who have a small facility with a few workers, or people who have subcontracted the work out to existing boat yards. Quite often, their innovative ideas are picked up by the mainstream, so they are always worth a look-see. Gulfstream Yachts is such a concern, and at this year’s Miami Boat Show, its new 52 caught our eye. We found some good ideas, and this 52 is part of a growing trend of large center consoles.

    Captain's Report

    Gulfstream 52 sun pad
The forward sun pad is expected to be a popular spot on the Gulfstream 52.
    Gulfstream 52 profile
The Gulfstream Yachts 52 presented her striking profile at the Miami International Boat Show in February.

When we looked into Gulfstream Yachts, we wanted to know more about the company and where its boats were built, since the company’s mailing address is a Tampa UPS store. When we caught up with Gulfstream Yachts’ CEO Hunt James, we asked him about the company’s first model, a 34’ (10.36 m) center console, as well as the 52. He told us both models came about because he was unable to find anything in the market that fulfilled his needs for a boat. Gulfstream builds the 34 in North Carolina, using pressure-foam construction to bond together the hull and deck in a monocoque structure, he says.

The 52 is built just outside of Tampa using more traditional construction, but she also is foam-filled. James says that this unsinkable machine remains true to its heritage of producing hard-core fishing and diving boats.

    Gulfstream 52 outboards
The first Gulfstream 52 had quad 627-hp Seven Marine outboards.

Gulfstream Yachts collaborated with renowned yacht designers Setzer Yacht Architects and Michael Peters Yacht Design, and used Peters’ patented Stepped-V Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) hull design. James says the collaboration resulted in a 52 with the feature set of a larger yacht packaged into a center console boat. He notes that the boat is a capable fishing and diving platform and could be suited for use as a tender to superyachts, thanks to its sheltered passenger space.

    Gulfstream 52 helm
The enclosed helm area sets the Gulfstream 52 apart from other outboard-powered center console designs.

While the 52 has a cabin forward of the center console that sleeps two, the hard enclosure offers the additional benefit of being able to serve as a second accommodation space.

    Gulfstream 52 seating
A sheltered seating area means the crew can be out of elements and kept comfortable with onboard climate control.

In business for 10 years, Gulfstream Yachts uses pressure foam-filled construction to build its boats, and has built for recreational, military, law enforcement, fire department and commercial customers, says James. The builder notes that each boat is built to customer specs so the layout can be altered to meet usage requirements, such as a fishing-oriented layout with larger livewells, an open bow and a tower or, for a cruising configuration, eliminate the tower and include an integrated rear bench and optional forward seating. The enclosure can have a door on either side with passenger seating at the rear of that space or a single door in the aft bulkhead with seating along the sides.

    Gulfstream 52
Because the Gulfstream 52 is a semi-custom boat, the configuration and seating can be designed to accommodate the needs of each buyer.

The Gulfstream Yachts 52 is priced at $1,520,000, well-equipped, according to the builder.

Gulfstream Yachts also announced a design for a 66’ (20 m) center console.
