Brief Summary

When it comes to PWCs it seems like everyone is obsessed with horsepower, and the team at Kawasaki is no different. They offer the Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX, a 1498cc supercharged four-stroke, four-cylinder powered machine with 300 horses under the seat. We finally had the chance to review one, but not on the water - it was stuck on land at a dealership. Still, this machine offers a lot for a boater to think about.

    Captain's Report

    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
The Jet Ski Ultra 300LX looks fast, even when standing still.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
The engine takes up all the room under the seat. We think the position of the engine and gas tank will put the center of gravity right where it belongs, just about amidships.

The Ultra 300LX measures in at 132.7 inches, just over 11 feet, and weighs in (with all fluids and fuel) at approximately 1019 lb. She carries 20.6 gallons of fuel, more than most machines in her class and utilizes a 160mm jet pump, again one of the largest in her class.

    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
Here is the 160mm jet pump of the Ultra 300LX. Note that the ride plate and the entire pump assembly is aluminum. The reboarding step is mounted low, which means it will be easier to get your knee or foot up on it from the water.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
The water intake is elongated to increase flow into the pump.

Kawasaki has now added a trim feature which other PWCs have had for a while. This allows you to set the angle of the pump nozzle up or down 8 degrees. This will effectively raise or lower the bow to better suit water conditions.

    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
The 300 also offers a cruise control and wake mode. You can set your engine speed, then use the up and down arrows to adjust your speed in 5 mph increments. The throttle is also now semi-fly-by-wire. An accelerator position sensor converts the throttle lever position into an electric signal that is then sent to a small electric motor on the throttle valve.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
On the port side of the handlebar are the stop/start buttons as well as the trim adjuster, the yellow button seen in this image.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
There are several things to point out in this view from the driver’s seat. First, the mirrors are adjustable which makes it easy for the driver to see aft when towing, even though there should always be an aft facing observer riding along. Second, Kawasaki has made the indicator numbers larger and combined everything into one display. The third item is the location of the reverse handle, now positioned on the port side.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
In this image you can see how Kawasaki is starting to focus more on the overall looks of the machine. Not only are they offering bold colors and graphics, but they have really added some striking design elements as well.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
This is a cool feature we really like. The center of the handlebar accommodates a GPS device. This is a welcome change for all of us who have mounted our GPS devices on the storage lid.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
This is also a feature we like. These ports are located on the port side of the transom and allow you to hook up to a hose to run your engine on land to flush it with fresh water.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
In this image you can see the cast aluminum mounting and hinge for the forward storage compartment cover. This is an area that needs to be sturdy given all the pounding that a PWC will take. Note the bolts and the rubber shroud on the gas assist strut.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
Designed as a three passenger machine, the seat was very comfortable just sitting on it in the dealership. And there's a perfectly positioned grab strap just behind the driver, far more comfortable than reaching back to hold the seat handles.
    Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 300LX
Overall we like the direction that Kawasaki is going with the new machines. Of course we will need to get them on the water and see how they do in a test. The Ultra 300LX has an MSRP of $14,999.00 and comes with a 12 month limited factory warranty.
