Brief Summary

At first glance, it looks like just another center console, but the Pro-Line 23 Sport has some notable features worth checking out. Fishing offshore requires a boat that has the muscle to get you out and back safely. For decades anglers have gravitated to 23’ center consoles because they are not too expensive, yet they are big enough in which to feel comfortable going offshore. The Pro-Line 23 Sport comes from a pedigree of hard working boats that never cringe at getting the job done, and have a good reputation with anglers from Florida to Maine.

    Captain's Report

    Pro-Line 23 Sport
At first glance, it looks like just another center console, but the Pro-Line 23 Sport has some notable features worth checking out.

    Capt. Steve Says...

Let’s start with her cockpit depth. The Pro-Line 23 Sport has 25” of cockpit depth. While that is about average for this size range, I‘ve been in larger boats with less, and you’d be surprised at what a significant difference it makes. Lower height has you leaning against the cockpit coaming at an obviously lower point of contact on your body, and when putting up a fight, that can mean the difference between fighting the fish and joining the fish.

    Pro-Line 23 Sport
The hardtop is on the options list and allows for rocket launchers, spreader lights, and outriggers. Note the open real estate on the panel for electronics. The aft bolster has a flip up seat below. And you can make out the seats forward for casting.

    And then there’s ergonomics...

Little things can also make a big difference. When cleaning the boat, you’ll love that the padded cockpit bolsters slide off their tracks and can be cleaned separately. These padded cushions are robust and are about the most comfortable I have seen on this size boat.I also like that the hardtop life jacket storage isn’t just a zippered bag that hangs underneath the overhead. Those inevitably sag and hit me in the head, probably because I’m the type to wear the life jackets, and use that area for storing chart books and supplies instead of life jackets. This boat has metal straps that are designed to beef up the overhead and have a side benefit of supporting anything that gets placed into the overhead storage. And thank you, Pro-Line, for having the rocker switches all grouped together and more to the point, having the associated circuit breakers right under the switches. I hate having to look for a breaker panel or fuse box, or worse, check in line fuses for a disrupted circuit. Give me a popped breaker right where I can see it for a quick diagnosis. Significantly, Pro Line is one of the few builders to do this.

    Pro-Line 23 Sport
Functional bow rails are on a recessed section of the gunwale to keep them from interfering with your fight, yet are still easily at hand. Notice the bow cushions don’t go all the way forward, which allows for creating the casting platform. The seat ahead of the console houses an insulated cooler that doubles as a fish locker.

    Electronics accessibility...

The dash is hinged to allow for easy access to the back of the panel, thus making electronics installation a breeze. There’s also plenty of room to mount your choice of packages. Pro-Line starts you off by offering some basic factory installed options that include a VHF radio, either a Garmin GPS Map 440 with a 400c fishfinder, or a Garmin 4208 model with its own transducer.

    Pro-Line 23 Sport
The flip-up transom seat is now a staple of every fishing boat. To port is the baitwell, and to starboard the transom door allows access to the swim platform and boarding ladder.

    Other notables...

The bow area has a built-in casting platform that doesn’t need filling in with panels. It’s just ahead of the twin V-seats. The transom door gives you access to the integral swim platform and boarding ladder, which helps the 23 Sport do double duty as a dive boat. Choices in engines and graphics are where the Pro-Line 23 Sport really shines. There are 13 engine options up to 300-hp max (and all are options, there is no standard engine package) and 16 graphics options. Clearly, the boat you order will truly be yours. This helps not only from being able to express your individuality, but being able to identify your coveted boat much easier should it ever get stolen. Also you can match the engine to the handiest or friendliest trained mechanic, price shop, warranty shop, and find the boat which has all of the technical attributes that you want.

The Pro-Line 23 Sport has a length of 23’ (7 m), a beam of 8’ 6” (2.6 m), and a hull draft of 17” (43 cm). Since the 23 Sport is not packaged with a standard engine, there is no measurement for draft with an engine mounted, or for weight. Her hull weight, however, is 3,540 lbs. (1,606 kg), so you can add engine weight, trailer, 125 gallons (473 L) of fuel, and equipment for a GVW that you’ll need a properly equipped tow vehicle for, if you plan to tow at all. I haven’t tested the Pro-Line 23 Sport, but I‘ve yet to be on a Pro-Line that disappointed, and don’t expect that this one will be an exception. But a full test will reveal specific handling characteristics and fuel burns that are important notes for an offshore fishing machine, so stay tuned. For now, the Pro-Line 23 Sport is a boat that is clearly deserving of making it onto your short list of boats to notice. We’re told that there are units in the field which means not only can you get a Pro-Line 23 Sport, you should be able to get a very good deal. That together with letting a few engine dealers know that you are going to buy, should get you a good deal there as well. By shopping both the boat and the engine you should be able to come out with a total price that is hard to beat -- particularly when comparing it to a pre-packaged boat where the boat builder is effectively a captive of the engine company.
