All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

    Captain's Report

    Contents of Report

    Robalo 206 Cayman S running
The Robalo 206 Cayman S is a revision of the earlier 206 Cayman with updated seating. Shown here with optional Bimini, a canvas T-top is also an option.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S bow
The backrests and cushions will be much appreciated by guests.

    Mission

With a shallow draft of 25” (63.5 cm) with the engine down, and extended v-plane bottom to limit bow rise on accelerating, and with aggressive hull flare, the 206 Cayman S can get in close, or zip to the next fishing hot spot destination quickly and keep the occupants dry. She is intended to appeal to boaters who want a bay boat that is a few notches above low-priced boats in class but is still a good value.

    Robalo 206 Cayman S running
The 206 Cayman S comes standard with a 115-hp Yamaha, however, the boat is rated to handle up to a 200-hp outboard.

    Major Features

      • Removable backrests and cushions for forward seating

      • Console seating with livewell beneath and built-in rod holders

      • Fold down jump seats aft

      • Bench helm seat with adjustable bolster and self-draining cooler

      • Electrical breaker switches instead of fuses

    Design

The 15-degree deadrise on the hull is designed to produce a stable fishing platform, higher speeds, and fuel efficiency, while the extended v-plane hull creates buoyancy aft.

    Seating

Robalo 206 Cayman S helm bench
All the seating, like the helm bench, is dual purpose. In this case, the bench acts as a hinged cover for the large 70-quart (66 L) cooler beneath, and the back rest flips forward and aft for driving or watching the troll.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S seating
The first things we noticed about this boat as we prepared to step aboard are the large 9” (35 cm) wide gunwale and lots of seating.

In fact, the “S” in Cayman S stands for seating. The seating has color-coordinated vinyl upholstery. The bow seating has removable backrests. The front console seat base has six built-in vertical rod holders on the sides. Hatch openings are fitted with tension hinges to prevent dropping the cover while keeping both hands free.

Robalo 206 Cayman S bow casting
With cushions and backrests removed, the forward casting deck with diamond pattern non-skid is revealed. Note the stainless steel hardware and cupholders, which all have drain tubes to the self-draining cockpit.

    Center Console

Robalo 206 Cayman S walk way
The console has 20” (50.8 cm) of walkway on either side, which is good for this size boat. The throttle and shift is quite vertical and not ergonomic.
Robalo 206 Cayman S helm seat
The center console has a double bench seat/leaning post with adjustable bolster.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S helm
The helm is shown with the powder-coated T-top frame, a $4,335 option.

The console itself is topped by a compass with open storage on either side. The port side storage has a charging port and both trays have drains. The console includes illuminated push buttons with integral breakers, Yamaha engine gauges, a stainless steering wheel on a tilt base with optional speed knob, throttle with engine tilt control, and stainless steel cup holders with built-in drain tubes.

    Robalo 206 Cayman S windshield
The acrylic windshield is installed on an aluminum base and tall enough to protect the driver when standing up to steer. It is surrounded by a stainless grab rail.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S livewell
The front console seat flips up to reveal the forward livewell (15-gallon/57 L). The seat back flips down to access the console interior.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S wiring
The center console seat back flips down to give access to helm wiring.

    Bow

Robalo 206 Cayman S bow hatches
Bow hatches hinge up on stainless steel pistons to reveal rod holder storage to port, general storage in the middle, and a 45-gallon (170 L) insulated self-draining fishbox on the right. Note that the port locker has three rod racks.
    Robalo 206 Cayman S cleats
The boat has pop-up cleats and the forward hatch is pre-wired for the optional ($2,120) trolling motor. The forward hatch also has lock downs for the Danforth anchor.

    Stern

Robalo 206 Cayman S jump seats
The aft 15-gallon (57 L) livewell is flanked by folding jump seats with batteries below.
Robalo 206 Cayman S battery switch
The battery selector switch is mounted externally under the starboard jump seat on the stern for easy access.
Robalo 206 Cayman S aft casting
Folding down the jump seat backs makes a smooth aft casting deck. The compartments on either side of the engine hold a 5 gallon (19 L) bucket and folding swim ladder, respectively.

    Performance and Handling

We had mild conditions on test day, which are generally the inshore conditions the boat is designed for. With an optional engine upgrade to 150-hp Yamaha, our test boat topped out on WOT at 47.9 mph and 5900 rpm.

The boat was up on plane quickly in 2.5 seconds. It corners nicely and with her 50-gallon (189 L) fuel tank, you could run at a cruising speed of 25.1 mph and 3500 rpm for an endurance of 8.7 hours as she sips gas at 5.2 gph.

    Observations

The Robalo 206 Cayman S is clearly an upgrade to the original 206 Cayman. It’s still a dedicated fishing boat, but now it has the dual ability to take friends and family for a comfortable day on the water as it has a USCG passenger capacity of eight people or 1,200 lbs. (8/544 kg). It comes standard with a single-axle trailer to visit those favorite spots. It is a well-built, entry-level bay boat at a reasonable price.

    NMMA certified using ABYC Standards.
