Brief Summary

The Sea Fox 236 DC (for Double Console) combines the most important attributes of a center-console fishing boat with those of a family bowrider to create a boat with a foot in each camp. The 23' 3" (7 m.) Sea Fox isn't the equal of the company's dedicated fishboats when it comes to towing baits -- Sea Fox is one of the most respected fishing boat builders around, so nobody expects that it would be. But while a hard-core center-console or walk-around fishing boat this size sacrifices all else to fishability, the 236 DC manages to incorporate plenty of creature comforts that should make Mom and the kids happy to be on board, even when Dad is trolling or casting. There's room for two to lounge in the forward cockpit to read or catch rays, and the back-to-back passenger seat unfolds to form a narrow but adequate sun bed when the lines have been reeled in. In short, the Sea Fox 236 DC wears two hats, neither one the height of fashion, but both will do the job.

Captain's Report

Sea Fox 236 DC
We predict Mom will declare the forward cockpit a "No-Fishing" zone. The molded backrests at the bow provide lounging support, while stereo speakers pipe in tunes. Yes, it will convert to a sun lounge with the optional filler cushion. There's stowage under the seats and a big anchor locker.

Swiss Army Boat

Fishermen need rod holders, bait wells, a rigging station and lots of free gunwale space; that's why center consoles make such good fishing boats – their whole length is open for angling. But most have little place to sit, certainly no place to sprawl in comfort. Family boats, on the other hand, are usually packed with seats – helm seat, companion seat, aft bench seat, forward seats in bowriders and so forth. There's no room left for fishing. Sea Fox took the middle ground when they created the 236 DC, using the multifunction Swiss Army knife approach.

Sea Fox 236 DC
The passenger seat unfolds when not needed for watching baits to create a sunbed for one thin person. This was a standard feature of runabouts when we were kids, and it still works fine today. An optional pedestal seat can replace it, though. Note the drink holders and the removable cooler underneath, good for bringing food aboard and taking fish home.

Starting with a family bowrider, Sea Fox adapted the cockpit for fishing, adding a bait-rigging station, rod holders, raw water washdown and a 72-qt. (68.1 l) removable cooler. The passenger seat is a back-to-back affair that can unfold to make a narrow sunbed, but can serve for a perch to watch baits, too. They fit lockable rod stowage into the portside console and a rod box under the port gunwale; for family comfort, there's an in-console head with a portable toilet and dome light, too. A large under-sole locker will hold a wakeboard; a ski-tow bar is optional.

Sea Fox 236 DC
The sink with spray faucet and cutting board aft of the helm can be a bait-prep station – that's what Sea Fox calls it – or a cockpit wet bar for making drinks or lunch. Take your pick; it works fine either way. There's tackle stowage behind the locker under the sink.

Sea Fox is known for its rugged "Fibre4" construction, proven in their fishing boats which are often driven hard. The 236 DC benefits, even though it might not endure such treatment (at least not with Mom and the kids aboard). There's no structural wood in the 236 DC, nor in any Sea Fox. The foam-cored hull is supported by all-fiberglass stringers that are also bonded to the cockpit sole, creating a box-beam structure that shouldn't twist or wrack no matter how hard you push it. In the transom, a glassed-in aluminum plate adds support around the engine mount.Closed cell foam injected into appropriate spaces in the hull and deck provides positive flotation, while all-stainless hardware will stand up to the elements without demanding maintenance. Sea Fox covers the 236 DC with a limited lifetime hull warranty.

Sea Fox 236 DC
Remove the bench-seat backrests (they slide into rod holders) and stow the seat cushions and the cockpit becomes a serious fishing center, with a 19-gal. (72 l) aerated livewell and raw water washdown. The trim tabs are recessed, so you won't cut your lines on them when working a fish around the transom. When family boating, replace the cushions and the cockpit becomes a seagoing family room.

Sea Fox is one of the major players in the offshore fishing world, so folks looking for a dual-purpose family/fishing boat would be remiss not to check out this dual-console 236 DC. We haven't tested the boat, but independent sources say she'll run over 48 mph (78 kph) with a single 200-hp outboard. (Max power is 250-hp.) That's plenty fast for fishing or family fun, in our opinion. Her combination of fishboat and bowrider leaves a little to be desired in either case when compared to a single-purpose boat (not as much cockpit room for fishing, not as comfortable seating for family), but she's certainly more than up to both tasks in our opinion. We'd add the Sea Fox 236 DC to our list if we needed a Swiss Army boat.
