    Captain's Report

Tidewater Boats 2200 Carolina Bay running shot
With a sharp entry and broad bow flare, the 22'4" (6.81 m) Tidewater 2200 Carolina Bay is a small boat that can handle big water.

Her pronounced bow flare (some call it a “Carolina Flare”) helps the boat deliver a dry ride in coastal chop and creates a large forward casting deck that spans much of the boat’s 8’6” (2.59 m) beam. Fold-down seats create an aft casting area as well, so at least three adults can fish this boat comfortably. For fishing, there are large locking rod lockers forward and two livewells. The boat is built with no wood and comes with a 10-year transferable hull warranty. Tidewater rigs its boats with Yamaha outboards and buyers can choose among five Value Packages.

The boat widens at amidships and flares out forward to create a large casting deck.

    Features Inspection

    The Bow

For fishermen, the forward casting deck will be the focal point of the 2200 Carolina Bay. The boat comes pre-wired for a trolling motor and there’s an anchor locker in the forepeak. Tidewater uses pull-up cleats to keep the decks clear. Just aft in the center of the foredeck sole is a large hatch that opens on a pneumatic strut. Outboard on each side are locking rod lockers with space for eight fishing rods. After a quick stop for some live bait, anglers can store the castnet in a locker beneath the cockpit sole.

The starboard locking rod locker opens on a stainless-steel gas strut so anglers can use two hands to retrieve their gear.

    The Helm Console.

There are vertically-positioned rod holders on each side of the 2200 Carolina Bay’s center console. A hatch in the port side of the console provides access to the forward side of the dash. A clear acrylic windscreen, Yamaha gauges and controls and two cupholders come standard, and there’s plenty of panel space for owners to add electronics. Down below are two items that any boater will appreciate, a glovebox and an open tray where drivers can stash small items. Up top, a locking electronics box has space for a VHF radio and other accessories.

With the steering wheel positioned as far to port as possible, the helm console actually has space for two adults. Also, note the glovebox below the throttle binnacle.

The ventilated hatch in the port side of the helm console provides easy access to the dash rigging and more storage.

Passengers need somewhere to sit en route to the fishing grounds and the 2200 Carolina Bay has a few choices. There’s space for at least one person on the cooler on the forward side of the helm console. The leaning post lets two people stand or sit and has a flip-up bottom cushion. Finally, in the aft corners of the cockpit are two jump seats with fold-up backrests.

The 2200 Carolina Bay’s rear jump seats have backrests that fold flat when not needed, creating a flat aft casting deck.

    The Stern.

In addition to the four rod holders on the back of the leaning post, there are two in the gunwales in the aft corners of the boat. The stern casting deck has space for one angler to work comfortably. The 30- and 12-gallon (114 L and 45 L) livewells are in the aft deck and there's also access to check on accessories, such as the bilge and livewell pumps and batteries.

The rear jump seats fold down to provide added fishing space. Hatches just behind them let owners get to accessories such as the bilge and livewell pumps.
Tidewater Boats 2200 Carolina Bay boarding ladder
The optional swim step on the port side stern has a two-step boarding ladder and a grab rail.

Tidewater builds the 2200 Carolina Bay with a hand-laid fiberglass hull supported by a fiberglass stringer system. All voids in the hull and stringers are filled with flotation foam. To resist blistering, the hull is protected with a Vinylester barrier coat. All of the stainless steel hardware is installed with aluminum backing plates.

We haven’t tested the 2200 Carolina Bay so we don’t have performance numbers. Tidewater typically packages the boat with Yamaha outboards. Base power is a Yamaha 150-hp 4-stroke outboard. Yamaha tested the boat with a 250-hp F250XA motor with 14 ¾” x 23” three-bladed stainless steel Saltwater Series II propeller. So powered, the boat hit a top speed of 60 mph at 6000 rpm, burning 22.8 gph. Best cruise was 26.6 mph at 3000 rpm where the boat burned 5.5 gph, giving it a range of about 260 miles with 10% fuel in reserve.

    10-year transferable hull warranty.

Tidewater Boats 2200 Carolina Bay running shot
In addition to being a solid fishing boat, the 2200 Carolina Bay could be a handsome choice as a yacht tender.

The 2200 Carolina Bay is designed for inshore fishing. With her deep entry and broad bow flare, she should be able to handle choppy water in a bay, lake or river, and to ease outside the inlets in reasonable weather. She’s equipped with all requisite fishing gear, such as the livewell and rod storage and her large forward casting deck has space for two people to fish comfortably. The aft casting deck should accommodate a third angler.Seating includes a bench on the front of the console plus the two aft jump seats. The 2200 Carolina Bay has open lockers and dedicated rod storage in the bow, plus space in the helm console and beneath the aft jump seats.Outboard power from Yamaha is available up to 250-hp. The base motor is a 150, so a 200-hp 4-stroke could be a good all-around compromise.
