If you’re in the market for a twenty something, single outboard powered fishing machine, but were hoping to get some creature comforts like a cabin and a walk-around bow, then the 2302 by Trophy might just have what you are looking for. Versatile and functional, the 2302 supplies all the important needs of an angler; a large cockpit area, a generous live-bait well and a high freeboard. In addition, she can also work as a family get-away boat with her aft jump seats, a transom walk-through and swim platform.
The intelligent layout of the 2302 makes available plenty of useable space at the foredeck. There is enough room here for two people to work a fish. A polished stainless steel bow rail is tall, so as to ensure greater safety. A handy, solo seat is also located at the bow, just in case you want to relax and cast your line from the front. Dropping the hook at your favorite fishing hole will be a snap, thanks to a large anchor roller mounted on the pulpit, you just pull a pin, and anchors away. Otherwise, you can stow the hook and rode in the deep anchor locker located to starboard. One other notable feature is the excellent non-skid surface that Trophy molds into every deck they build.
The T-top and sturdy, fiberglass molded hardtop make this boat even better. The massive diameter aluminum tubes provide perfect hand holds all around the structure. There is also a useful floodlight and ample storage space for your rods in the rocket launchers above. The 2302 boasts a wide electronics box that is neatly molded into the hardtop’s ceiling, making it the best spot for keeping expensive equipment dry.
Behind the acrylic, folding door, the cabin features a wide V-berth for added sleeping comfort on those overnight trips. Removal of a filler board and cushions, converts the berth into a dinning area with table. The cushions are comfortable and the interior of the cabin is fully lined with carpet. Located to port is a mini galley with pressurized fresh water faucet and sink, and neatly below is an alcohol stove that can be removed and setup quickly for a hot meal. On the starboard side of the cabin is a pump-out toilet which is a nice upgrade from the typical porta-potti that come equipped on other boats. There are storage cabinets, in addition to rod holder eyelets on each side.
Behind the Captain’s Seat
At the helm, a non-glare dash panel, houses just enough gauges to keep an eye on the engine. Joining the gauges are columns of accessory power switches, located on the port and starboard sides of the panel. A large stainless steel captains wheel provides added steering leverage, and the gunwale mounted engine controls by Mercury, are close at hand. Trophy did a nice job of molding an additional electronics tier on top of the dash to support a fishfinder, GPS and radar monitors. These gadgets will be an easy reach from the thermoplastic molded bucket seats. The captain and companion seats swivel, as well as, adjust fore and aft. Some people may find that the armrests make the seats a bit narrow, but the companion seat compensates with a snazzy flip-down footrest.
The aft cockpit is rigged strictly for action. Starting with a large re-circulating live baitwell located on the starboard side. Across the cockpit on the port sides is a very large Igloo cooler. Just aft of that, in the sole of the cockpit, is a pair of deep long fish boxes that self-drain, naturally. Generous steps are molded in the deck, making bow access safer. At the transom, removable jump seats provide added people capacity and can be quickly removed when not needed. Completing the stage is a rugged transom door with walk-thru and numerous rod holders, mounted almost everywhere in the cockpit.
From the pulpit to the transom, this boat measures 23- feet, 5 inches in length. Her widest part measures in at 8 feet, 5 inches long, and she tips the scales at over 3,800 pounds. That’s a lot of boat to push, so Trophy offers half a dozen Mercury engines to choose from. They range from a 150- horsepower two-stroke, to a healthy 225 horsepower, clean burning, four-stroke outboard set up for saltwater use. With the drive in the down position, you will need at least 37 inches of water to clear the prop.
Equipped with the high-end model Optimax engine from Mercury, the 225 horses propelled our test boat to a comfortable 43 miles per hour at 6,000 rpm. At 4,500 rpm we settled on the best cruise speed at 30.7 miles per hour. Combined with the 2302’s long-range fuel capacity, you’ll be able to fish for 151 miles before turning back to the docks.
