    Captain's Report

Fast is Fun in a Pontoon BoatTested By Captain Keith BurtonSomething weird is happening with pontoon boats. These bastions of family fun are becoming more than living rooms on the lake. Can you say fast? Can you say fun to drive?Well, sure you can. And that leads me to this review of the new Voyager Express Cruise Elite. Yes it is a mouthful of a name, but after spending some time with this new pontoon boat, the name fits.Voyager Marine, based in Camdenton, Missouri, has built a solid reputation for itself for excellent design, engineering and manufacturing in their line of pontoon boats. Attention to details and to customer needs are among the company’s hallmarks and they are reflected in Voyager’s boats. That legacy fits perfectly with this new 22-foot pontoon boat. The Voyager Express Cruise Elite is a tri-log pontoon boat. The extra “log” in the center provides more stability and lift on the water for better speed and handling. Starting at the bow, the Voyager Express Cruise Elite provides a comfortable place to be. Lining both the port and starboard sides are full sun lounges complete with forward-facing reclining backrests. The lounge seats wrap inside around the bow to the bow boarding gate. The look is impressive.Nicely padded with premium vinyl coverings, and bright colors, both lounges provide an enormous amount of beneath-seat storage with fully lined compartments. And the reclining backrests are just at the right angle to provide hours of in-the-sun enjoyment.A bow boarding door makes getting off and on the boat easy when beached, and you will also appreciate the standard docking lights port and starboard. Speaking of lights, there are decklights throughout the cabin for those romantic night time cruises. The fun continues into the rear seating area with a wrap-around bench seat with even more storage. The port-side bench has a special benefit as it can be unfolded, doubling its size, to form a large two-person sun lounge. The expansion, however, does cut quite a bit into the walking room in the rear section of the boat, but hey, the expanding seat is still a great feature to have. Also at the rear seating area is a mount for a small kidney-shaped table for enjoying a meal or snack while onboard. But you will have to remove the table and it’s supporting post to fold out the bench seat. The table is easy to remove with just a twist. The mounting bracket in the deck is strong and provides plenty of anchorage for the table.Throughout the boat are well-placed cupholders that are plenty deep for those extra large cups of your favorite beverage. At the stern is a large padded sun lounge. The front portion of the sun lounge can be lifted to reveal a fold-out changing station with plenty of room for a portable toilet or providing some needed privacy while on the water. The command console features attractive black on white gauges complete with lighted toggle switches to control the electrics onboard. Circuit breakers protect the electrics onboard so there are no fuses to replace. A marine-use CD radio is standard as well as a very comfortable premium captain’s chair that can swivel and slide forward and back. The seat can also be reconfigured to provide standing space in front of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is wood-toned and tilts. The helm console includes a freshwater faucet and sink with additional storage beneath. We particularly liked the small lockable compartment on the port side of the command console that is ideal for storing a wallet or some valuables while you are onboard. The boat scoots over the water with a smooth ride and takes fairly heavy waves and wakes without undue pounding. The stability both in motion and at speed with this pontoon boat would be appreciated by anyone who has ever been bounced around by a regular boat.Overall, the Voyager Express Cruise Elite offers plenty of performance to haul skiers and wakeboarders, and has the room and comfort for all your family and friends. The materials are first-rate and the fit and finish provide what surely would be many years of use.
