Brief Summary

Tilli Antonelli, who founded the Pershing brand of yachts in 1985 and sold it to the Ferretti Group in 1998 and stayed on as president until last March, last week announced the launch of Wider Yachts in Milano. Firing a shot across the bow of the boating industry, Antonelli said last week, "The boating market nowadays is quite conventional and tends not to have new ideas. Sometimes it is quite difficult to recognize one brand of boat from another, especially in the open day cruiser category."

Captain's Report

Wider Yachts 40
With a center cockpit and the helm aft, cuddy forward and two steps in the hull, Antonelli's new boat will be for the fast set.

Report from IBI--

Though the company was formed in the spring, Antonelli officially launched Wider last week at a press conference in Milan. He said Wider would begin with a 12 m (40 ft) open cockpit boat that would be launched at the Genoa show. It would eventually build 11m (3 5ft) and 15 m (50 ft) models.

One of the best riding places will be at the helm, in the stern of the boat.

The Wider 40 was designed by Fulvio De Simoni, Pershing's chief designer, with a stepped hull by Mark Wilson. Wilson's racing hulls have won multiple world championships. Antonelli said the hull was designed for fuel efficiency and light weight using Scrimp technology and vacuum infusion. It has a range of 350 miles at 40 knots. The boat also has space on the transom for a small tender or personal watercraft. "But what makes Wider really different if compared to the existing day cruisers has to do with space and stability," said Antonelli. "The boat allows us to double the space of the cockpit. Two lateral extension transform the boat into a sort of playground in the middle of the sea."

It has not yet be reveled what will be in the cuddy. We can't wait to find out.

According to renderings, the two gunwales along the center of the boat fold out and down to widen the cockpit. "For this particular reason I would say that the boat is a wider cockpit," said Antonelli, referring to the company's name. Antonelli has partnered with Paolo Favilla, previously general manager of Grandi Navi Veloci and CEO of Pershing, alongside Antonelli in 2009, and Vincenzo Sulpizi, also part of the Pershing team, initially as interior designer and subsequently project manager.

We imagine that this table and bench picnic dining arrangement makes into a large sun pad. Looks like it would make a great scuba diving boat as well.

The company is based in Castelvecchio di Monteporzio (PU), Marche, and the 10,000sq m manufacturing facility is the same one where Antonelli built the first Pershing in 1985. Antonelli said that the company has earmarked €1m for research and development. The company plans to distribute the boats in Europe, North and South America. "We are working on a new distributional model which provides for establishment of specially formed companies in the most interesting markets, where the headquarters will have an important role," said Antonelli in a statement. "In Italy, on the other hand, distribution will be dealt with centrally, and the sales network will be as capillary as possible."

Wider Yachts 40
With stern contours that are classic -- a PWC will nestle in and look like the coolest thing on the Riviera.
