**Know the safety-equipment requirements and be ready to be boarded.**This time of year, many boaters are excited to spend more time on the water. But it’s the smart boaters that take a look around their boats and make sure they have the safety equipment required by the U.S. Coast Guard, in case they get boarded. Have a look at the list, and make sure to fulfill the requirements before leaving the dock.

Remember, drowning is the number-one cause of boating fatalities, and the most preventable. The U.S. Coast Guard recommends that all boaters wear a life jacket and require their passengers to do the same.
