Three Injured in Boat Crash on Virginia Lake
8/15/26 – Smith Mountain Lake, VA
Three boaters were hospitalized after their center console ran aground
Three people were injured in a boat crash on August 15 on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, according to Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters said they responded at 11:37 p.m. to a reported boating accident; a center console boat had run onto the shore.
All three occupants were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Stranded Boater Rescued Near Marsh Fire
8/11/26 – Huron Co., MI
A stranded boater was rescued from the water near Bay Port in Huron County, Michigan, after his boat capsized and a marsh fire broke out.
The Huron County Sheriff's Office and several other emergency agencies responded to Brush's Marina a little before 8 p.m. on August 11. A Michigan conservation officer on scene could hear cries for help as an out-of-control marsh fire was burning.
The individual who was yelling for help had been on his own boat when he lost control of it and it capsized.
An airboat crew drove past the nearby marsh fire and pulled the stranded boater from the water. He was brought back to shore uninjured. On the way back, the thrust from the airboat put out the burning marsh. Responding agencies cleared the scene by 9 p.m.
Two Rescued from Boat Taking on Heavy Water
8/12/26 – Jacksonville, FL
Two people aboard a vessel were rescued near Florida’s St. Johns River Inlet after the boat took on heavy water.
The rescue mission occurred on August 12, approximately seven miles east of the inlet. On board the deteriorating boat were several hundred gallons of fuel, which posed a potential threat to the marine environment.
Boat Dewatered, Towed to Safety
The rescue mission was handled by a Coast Guard Station Mayport boat crew, a marine unit with the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department (JFRD), and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, with a Good Samaritan also responding to assist.
JFRD was able to dewater the boat before a Mayport Coast Guard crew towed it back to a local boat ramp.
Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville’s incident management division closely monitored the vessel’s condition for pollution concerns.
Boats Destroyed in Marina Fire on Mississippi River
8/13/26 – St. Charles Co., MO
Firefighters were called to Missouri’s Woodland Marina on the morning of August 13 after multiple boats caught fire.
The blaze destroyed two boats in the marina, shooting flames into the air until crews extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.
Water Boom Deployed to Prevent Fuel Spill
Firefighters responded to the marina in the morning after boats caught fire. The Orchard Farm Fire Protection District and the St. Charles City Fire Department used their boats to help battle the blaze.
Crews placed a water boom into the river near the fire location to prevent the spread of oil and fuel. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
Man Rescued from Log Jam, Fast Current
8/11/26 – Benton Co., IA
A boater stuck in a log jam on Iowa’s Cedar River was rescued on August 11 by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said it took only 17 minutes from when the communications center was notified to deploy a boat on the Cedar River for the rescue mission. First responders were able to rescue the boater from the log jam and fast-moving current.
Benton County officials described the operation as a success, saying, “17 minutes from a phone call to a boat in the water. One successful rescue. One man going home safely. That’s a pretty good day.”
Crews Respond to Boat Fire on Rhode Island Reservoir
8/15/26 – Burrillville, RI
Crews from the Pascoag Fire District responded to a fire on a boat with a full tank of fuel in Burrillville, Rhode Island, on August 15.
The fire department shared photos of smoke rising over Rhode Island’s Pascoag Reservoir and flames engulfing the vessel, and thanked community members for helping everyone make it off the boat.
It was unclear at the time what had caused the fire or if anyone was injured. Local reporters reached out to the Pascoag Fire District for more information.
Florida Firefighters Rescue Swamped Boater
8/12/26 – Santa Rosa Co., FL
A boater was rescued by fire crews after his canoe became swamped near the Woodlawn Beach Boat Ramp in Santa Rosa County, Florida.
Santa Rosa County Emergency Communications Center received a call from a boater in distress and dispatched Midway Fire District units to the scene.
Before Boat 35 reached the scene, a bystander offered the use of his personal watercraft and transported two Midway firefighters to the submerged canoe. Crews safely retrieved the boater and returned him to the boat ramp.
The crew from Truck 36 then launched Boat 35 and returned to the water to recover the canoe and the man’s belongings, including fishing poles and other equipment that had floated away when the canoe became swamped.
While the boater was being evaluated on shore, crews drained the canoe, brought it back to the boat ramp and loaded it onto the owner’s trailer.
