5/14/26 – Bradenton, FL

‘Florida man’ Kyle Wade was hospitalized after being thrown overboard during a ‘cheap boat challenge’

Self-described “Florida man” Kyle Wade said he and another participant were injured during a homemade boat competition after their self-built vessel came apart at speed.

In a post shared to his Instagram account, Wade said he and a fellow participant had entered a “cheap boat challenge” using a boat they had built themselves and believed was “built really well overall.” According to Wade, the floor failed just as the boat reached full speed, causing the vessel to stop instantly and throwing both men forward.

Wade said he slammed his head into the front of the boat before being thrown into the water, while his copilot hit his nose and face on the edge of a seat. Despite the violent stop, Wade noted that both men were wearing life jackets and had connected an engine shutoff tether before the run.

Wade said he remembered very little immediately after the crash and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, including a CT scan, before being released later that night. He said he was sore afterward but feeling “a lot better” the following day.

Despite the crash, Wade described the challenge as “such a fun” experience and said the incident “could have ended much worse.”

Sailor’s Flares Spark Wildfire on California Island

5/15/26 – Ventura, CA

Wildfire on a Coast

A wildfire caused by a shipwrecked sailor’s flares raged on California’s Santa Rosa Island

Firefighters in California were racing to save a grove of endangered trees after a shipwrecked sailor inadvertently started a wildfire on a remote island off the coast, in what sounds more like a movie than real life.

As of May 18th, the fire on Santa Rosa Island, part of Channel Islands National Park in Southern California, had spread to more than 10,000 acres, fueled by heavy winds that battered much of the state over that weekend.

The fire began on May 15th, when a 67-year-old man crashed his sailboat on the rocky coast of the island and fired emergency flares to signal for help, which according to the U.S. Coast Guard inadvertently sparked a wildfire.

Good Samaritans Spotted Sailboat Aground ‘In Pieces’

Two good Samaritans who were in their own boats reported to the National Park Service that they saw a vessel aground in pieces, said Kenneth Wiese, a Coast Guard spokesperson.

On May 16th, the Coast Guard was able to rescue the man, who was not injured, Wiese said. However, the fire continued to grow. Three dozen firefighters were battling the blaze, with more staff on the way, said Mike Theune, a fire information officer assigned to the Santa Rosa Island fire.

Firefighters were boarding boats with their gear to head to the island, about 45 miles from the Ventura, California, harbor.

Divers, fireboats, harbor patrol, and land units all attempted to rescue a man overboard

A man died on the night of May 16th after falling from a boat into the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Harbor Unit Patrol officers responded around 10:36 p.m. for a report of a person in the water near the District Yacht Club. DC Fire and EMS said land units, fireboats, and divers also arrived at the water rescue near the boat club.

A fireboat using sonar spotted an adult male and pulled him from the river, officials said. Paramedics took the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts failed.

The preliminary investigation showed the man fell out of a boat, police said. Authorities said no foul play was suspected, although the investigation was ongoing.

Two boaters were rescued by the Coast Guard and two more by police and a good Samaritan

Crews rescued four people during the early morning hours of May 15 after their boat capsized in the waters near Florida’s Jupiter Lighthouse, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The agency said a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet safely carried two mariners to shore for medical evaluation. The Jupiter Police Department and a good Samaritan helped two others return safely.

The owner of the vessel was set to coordinate the recovery of the craft with a friend, the Coast Guard said. No details on the boat or how it capsized were immediately available.

Authorities said the man told them he had been kayaking with another person who gave him a life jacket before going missing. Crews searched by land, water, and air for days using sonar, drones, divers and K9s, without finding the second man.

An ongoing investigation was being led by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Father and veteran Jeremiah Gamble, 25, failed to reappear after going below the water’s surface

The two-day search for a missing boater on a north Alabama lake ended with the recovery of his body.

The body of 25-year-old Jeremiah Gamble, a father and veteran, was recovered from Lake Guntersville on May 19th near the Honeycomb Campground area in Marshall County, Alabama, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

ALEA officials previously said a “single-vessel marine-related event” happened at 1:23 p.m. on May 17th in the area of Honeycomb Creek near Goat Island on Lake Guntersville.

Gamble was aboard a 24-foot 2023 Bentley Legacy pontoon boat with friends when he went below the water’s surface and did not reappear. No other details were released at the time.

His father, the Rev. Patrick Gamble, posted the following on Facebook: “I am relieved and sad to report this news. They recovered his body today from the lake. Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts as we continue to process.”

Multiple agencies assisted in the search, including: Guntersville Fire Department, Guntersville Rescue Squad, Crane Hill Fire and Rescue, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Guntersville Police Department’s Marine Unit, Marshall County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Cherokee County Rescue Squad and ALEA.
