USCG Rescues Man Trapped in Grounded Sailboat
10/11/26 – Coronado, CA
A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a man trapped inside a grounded sailboat near Coronado on the morning of October 11, after the vessel began taking on water.
The man called 911 for help after the sailboat ran aground. A Coast Guard boat crew located the vessel, but shallow water and dangerous conditions prevented rescuers from reaching it.
Rescue Swimmer Broke Through Cabin Roof
A helicopter crew was then dispatched to the scene. A rescue swimmer was lowered from the aircraft and discovered the man trapped inside the partially submerged cabin, struggling to breathe. The rescue swimmer provided the man with a snorkel before breaking through part of the cabin roof to reach him and bring him to safety.
The man was airlifted from the vessel and transferred to emergency medical personnel for further care. The dramatic rescue highlights the challenges Coast Guard crews can face when responding to maritime emergencies in shallow water and hazardous conditions.

Witnesses said Ward and his wife were boating in the channel leading into the canals south of Marker 37 when he was ejected from the boat, according to Berger. Wardens recovered Ward around 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 and he was released to the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office.
Ward was not wearing a personal flotation device or the vessel's emergency cut-off switch.
Sailor Unharmed as Boat Runs Aground
10/18/26 – Lewes, DE
A sailor from Texas made it to shore unharmed after his 20-foot sailboat ran aground near Herring Point at Delaware’s Cape Henlopen State Park on October 18.
The U.S. Coast Guard said it received two separate reports around noon of a blue sailboat rocking in rough conditions, with wind gusts estimated at 15 to 20 knots. One report indicated an anchor line could be seen extending from the sailboat.
The Coast Guard launched a boat from Indian River Inlet to investigate. Coast Guard crew members reached the sailboat and assisted the man on board.
Investigators said they learned the sailboat had been on a shoal when the sailor pulled up his anchor line. According to the USCG, the boat's outboard motor then dropped and struck the bottom, leaving the sailboat aground.
The sailor from Pasadena, Texas, was traveling from New York to Baltimore when he ran into trouble, according to the Coast Guard.
Coast Guardsmen said the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) assisted the man in safely getting off the sailboat. He was not hurt. The Coast Guard said authorities were working on a salvage plan to refloat the sailboat, which would likely need high tide.
