10/24/26 – Key Largo, FL

An overturned boat

A responding Coast Guard crew arrived as a 23-foot boat capsized with the captain still on board

Four boaters were brought safely ashore on October 24 after their vessel began flooding near Key Largo, Florida, prompting assistance from a passing boater and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The incident involved a 23-foot boat that was taking on water, according to authorities. A good Samaritan reached the vessel and took three people aboard another boat before the situation worsened. The captain stayed behind and tried to remove water from the vessel while awaiting help.

Coast Guard Arrives as Boat Capsizes

A responding crew from Coast Guard Station Islamorada arrived as the boat capsized. Coast Guard personnel rescued the captain, and all four people were subsequently transported to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Authorities reported no injuries following the rescue.

The response involved separate efforts to recover the passengers and captain. The three passengers had already been transferred to the good Samaritan’s vessel before the Coast Guard recovered the captain after the boat overturned.

A commercial salvage company later recovered the vessel, according to local news reports, which did not identify the boaters or explain what caused the boat to begin taking on water. They also did not specify how far offshore the emergency occurred.

Off-duty firefighter Otto Scherick swam out to assist three boaters clinging to an overturned vessel

An off-duty firefighter with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) turned a birthday outing into a life-saving mission on October 17, swimming out to rescue three boaters clinging to their overturned vessel off Big Talbot Island, Florida.

Firefighter Otto Scherick was celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday with a walk along a trail to the beach when he heard screaming. JFRD says he sprinted to the shoreline and spotted the boaters waving for help from their capsized boat offshore.

Rescuer Jury-Rigged Flotation Device from Gas Tank

Scherick swam out to reach them. Sizing up the current and conditions, he determined the group’s best option was to swim back to shore. With no life jackets on board, he disconnected the boat’s gas tank to use as a makeshift flotation device and guided the boaters toward land.

A bystander also swam out and stayed with the group the entire way in. The first call came in at approximately 10:47 a.m. Callers estimated the boaters were as far as 800 yards from shore. By 11:14 a.m. — just 27 minutes later — all three were safely back on land, where the C shift crew from JFRD Engine 66 met them. No injuries were reported.

Several agencies took part in the search for a 76-year-old man after his boat was found empty

The body of a missing boater was found after a multi-agency search of Georgia's Lake Sinclair, officials said.

Officials with the Baldwin County Public Safety Dive Team said that its members and others with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Putnam County Fire Rescue, and Baldwin County Fire Rescue used sonar technology and underwater robotic equipment to try and find the missing individual.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills confirmed to local reporters that 76-year-old George Williams of Milledgeville was found on the afternoon of October 22. Sills said that a boater found Williams' empty boat tied to a railroad trestle close to Haslam's Marina the previous morning.
