Attwood’s Sahara Mk2 bilge pump.

Attwood Corporation, which makes a variety of accessories for the marine industry, has unveiled the new Sahara Mk2 automatic bilge pump. The company says the pump is the only one on the market that eliminates air-locks thanks to its patented X-Air impeller. It ejects trapped air so the pump won’t run dry and burn out the motor.

Key Features

To make the Sahara Mk2 easier to install, Attwood uses external mounting feet instead of having to drive screws through the bottom of the basket. The new design eliminates the need to separate the two for installation. The outlet is also on the basket and not the housing so the latter doesn’t need to be removed for installation or maintenance. The pump also comes with straight and 90-degree outlets for more flexibility of installation.

The impeller (white object beneath blue arrow) keeps water flowing by eliminating air lock in the system.

If the pump cartridge does need to be removed, the task can be done so with one hand. Just squeeze the tabs on the basket and the housing comes right off. The basket has a total of seven mounting patterns to replace virtually all of the best known pumps on the market. The SteadySwitch has buoyancy control to reduce cycling and there’s a check valve so water won’t flow back into the bilge.

This check valve is installed in the outlet line to ensure that water doesn’t flow back into the boat’s bilge.

The Mk2 is available in 480 gph (1,530 lph), 830 gph (2,314 lph) and 1,241 gph (4,140 lph) versions.
