Cabo 41:
Fully-Equipped Express Fishboat
The Cabo 41 is an express fishboat, well-equipped and tournament-ready to do battle with big game. She measures 42’10” (13.05 m) overall, with a 15’9” (4.8 m) beam, and displaces 31,000 lbs. (14,061 kg), allowing her to deliver good performance on smaller engines than the 50-foot-and-up goldplaters. We tested her with the optional twin 715-hp Cummins QSM11s and found her easy on fuel at a 5.6-knot trolling speed, at which she burned just 2.3 gph. At a 2000-rpm cruise, she ran 25.4 knots and burned 44.2 gph for a range of about 284 NM with the 550-gallon (2,082 L) fuel capacity. Top speed was 34 knots. Fishing features include a 48-gallon (182 L) livewell in the transom, one of the larger in class, aft-facing mezzanine seating with a huge bait freezer under, tuna door, and the optional tuna tower. Below, she has an L-shaped settee, full galley, head and shower, and a master at the bow — all the necessities for a weekend in the islands. She is built by Hatteras in New Bern, N.C. More...

Caribiana Sea Skiffs:
Skiffs with Personality
Travel around the Caribbean and notice the distinct look of the colorful skiffs common there. A high bow, long graceful shear, lap-strake construction and wood accents recall a simpler, less stressful, pace of life often referred to as "island time." The vibrant colors and wood details evoke an uplifting sense of well-being that brings a smile. Here’s a shallow draft skiff that transports your mind and body. More...

Propspeed:
Running Gear Coating for Better Performance
For the last several years, we have been hearing people along the dock talking about Propspeed coatings of running gear. Does it really work? We have decided to investigate. What we discovered is that Propspeed has a devoted and loyal user base. It is a non-toxic paint that can prevent fouling on many boats used regularly at planing speed. The slippery surface of the multi-coat process is hard for marine growth to attach to and allows fouling to wash away as the boat operates, yet it puts no toxins in the water like common anti-fouling paints do. Propspeed consists of the yellow pigmented, two-part etching primer that chemically bonds to metal and provides a chemical and mechanical bond for the final component, the clear topcoat. It improves the life of sacrificial anodes due to reduced electrolysis, according to the company. It is also said to improve speed and fuel economy. But that is just part of the story. More...

Fleming 58:
A New One is Available
For many serious cruising folks, the Fleming 58 is the holy grail. She looks right, and she is built right. Every unit is an improvement on the one before in a never-ending quest for perfection by the company’s owners and shipwrights. The only trouble is that the builder has very limited production. We’re told by Fleming’s East Coast dealer, Burr Yacht Sales, that their next 58 with no name on it won’t be available for 18 months. Used ones rarely come up on the market because they are called for by people waiting in line. The dealer also says that depreciation on Flemings is negligible, given what we normally see in motoryachts in this size range. So, there is a lot of demand and not much supply, simply because the principals of the company have no interest in cranking them out. Each boat is lavished with many man-hours by an experienced shop-floor crew, and their build is overseen by long-distance cruising yachtsmen that are more interested in the quality of the boats they build than in making a fast buck. Take a look at the 58 – she’s our favorite in the Fleming line. More...

Fountaine-Pajot MY 40:
Ready to Party, Ready to Cruise
A party might break out at any time on the broad aft deck of the Fountaine-Pajot MY 40, which takes full advantage of this power cat’s 19’10” (5.96 m) beam to provide entertainment and accommodation areas. There’s seating here for eight or more, with large storage areas underneath. The curving teak stairs go up to the flying bridge, which adds another 20 square yards (16 sq. m) for al fresco entertaining. A power shade behind the transom settee combines with the full overhead to provide complete shade for this area as needed. The hydraulic swim platform, accessed via stairs on either side, is another standard feature in this sea-kindly cruiser, which was developed by naval architect Daniel Andrieux with interior design by PierAngelo Andreani. Below, she has three staterooms and two heads. More...
