Exploring and Camping Crystal River by Boat with Capt. Trip
In this BoatTest video companion, adventurer Capt. Trip Smith embarks on an multi-day boat camping journey through Florida's serene Crystal River waterways. Navigating south from his four-and-a-half-hour drive, Trip sets out to explore unfamiliar waters using a combination of viewer tips, chart plotting, and Google Earth.
The journey kicks off with tight clearance challenges as Capt. Trip carefully maneuvers his solar-panel-equipped aluminum boat under low-hanging bridges toward Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs. Along the way, he encounters local wildlife, including dolphins and manatees playing in the brackish shallows. Utilizing his vessel’s shallow draft and onboard solar setup—complete with an electric refrigerator and power bank—Trip navigates narrow channels before diving into pristine spring waters for a chilly, refreshing swim.
Transitioning from freshwater springs to the salt marshes of the Gulf of Mexico, the trip moves offshore toward the shallow sandbars of Sandy Hook and Molokina. Capt. Trip drops anchor, cooks up fresh scallops and carnivore meals right on board, and enjoys an uninterrupted gulf sunset. The expedition highlights the freedom of small-boat camping, showcasing shallow-water maneuvering, tide monitoring, and off-grid living setup, before finishing up with a swim back at Hunter Springs.
