Close Call at Holt's Lake - Boating Accident

Community Action Saves Two, Emphasizing Importance of Preparedness

A potentially tragic situation at Holt's Lake on March 22nd served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of water activities and the incredible power of community action. Two individuals, who entered the water without personal flotation devices (PFDs) to rescue a dog, were safely brought to shore thanks to the swift response of rescue teams and the invaluable assistance of a Good Samaritan.

The incident began when a dog jumped from a pontoon boat into the lake. A woman, acting instinctively, entered the water to save the dog. Recognizing her struggle, a man then followed. Unfortunately, the pontoon boat became disabled, leaving one person stranded onboard and the two rescuers struggling in the water.

The Smithfield and Four Oaks Fire Departments, responding to a water rescue call, quickly arrived on the scene. A crucial turning point came when a local resident, already on the lake in a john boat, stepped forward, pulling the two individuals from the water. Rescue teams then ensured their safe return to shore, where they were assessed by Johnston County Emergency Services and found to be unharmed.

This incident underscores the vital importance of wearing PFDs while on or near the water. Even in calm conditions, unexpected events can occur, and having proper safety equipment can be the difference between life and death. The quick thinking and selfless actions of the Good Samaritan, combined with the professional response of the rescue teams, prevented a potentially devastating outcome.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all those involved in this rescue. This incident serves as a powerful reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, prioritize safety, and be prepared for the unexpected when enjoying our waterways.
