The new power assist system is designed for simplicity and affordability.

Dometic Marine introduced its Electric Power Assist for outboards. The power-steering system is designed to fit a range of boats from pontoons and runabouts to center consoles. Building on its Optimus Outboard Electric Steering Actuator, Dometic said it created a more affordable system for lower-priced boats.

Entry-Level System

During a virtual introduction, Dometic president Eric Fetchko said, “The Optimus is a premium product. That’s why the engineers have worked hard on this product to make sure we have an entry-level system that can make a small, 20’ (6.1 m) boat drive like a car. It’s all about making the experience better for the boater.”

The system is designed to work with all mechanical outboard steering systems.

Plug and Play

Product manager Dave Wolfe said the Electric Power Assist doesn’t require a certified electrician to install. It requires four bolts and can be swapped from boat to boat on the water.

Dometic’s Dave Wolfe pointed out the details of the new system in an online demonstration.

The new unit is targeted for single-outboard boats from 90 to 200 hp and is compatible with all major outboard brands, integrating with a boat’s mechanical rotary or rack-and-pinion steering unit. The Electric Power Assist will be available to OEMs in May and will retail for $1,600. It’s expected to be available in the middle of 2021.
