The ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus.

Electric outboard engine builder ePropulsion now has its Spirit 1.0 Plus motor available in the United States from its distributors Mack Boring on the East Coast and Four Seas on the West Coast. The manufacturer says the Spirit 1.0 Plus produces power to match the output of a 3-hp four-stroke gasoline outboard and can push a 10’ (3.05 m) tender or be auxiliary power for a sailboat weighing a maximum of 1.5 tons (1,360.78 kg).

“We are pleased to offer our Spirit 1.0 Plus 3-hp electric outboard motor to boaters in the United States,” Chris Ponnwitz, ePropulsion spokesperson, said in a statement. “When looking for green, reliable and practical electric propulsion systems, our solutions are very affordable and flexible. With its exceptional range and ease of use, for ship-to shore or tender transport, the Spirit 1.0 Plus is the ideal solution.”

Extended Range

The Spirit 1.0 Plus is powered by a 1276 watt-hour battery, which ePropulsion says is the largest available for a motor of this size. The motor can push a tender up to 5 knots with a range of 6.4 nautical miles or 1 hour and 15 minutes of run time at full speed. Back off the throttle and the run can be extended for up to 20 hours and a range of 46 nautical miles, according to ePropulsion.

The Spirit 1.0 Plus can push a small tender at speeds of up to 5 knots.

Floating Battery

The battery weighs 19 pounds (8.62 kg) and the manufacturer says it floats. It can be changed in minutes and has a charge time of 3.5 to 8.5 hours depending on the charging system. It can also be charged using solar technology. The engine’s 48-volt operating system lets the Spirit 1.0 Plus work with external batteries as well.

The manufacturer makes its own E-Series batteries, the 2048Wh E40, the 4096Wh E80 and the 8960Wh E175 that can extend full-speed runtimes to 2, 4 and 9 hours, respectively.

The Spirit 1.0 Plus stores in a custom bag and the direct-drive outboard is available in extra short, short and long shaft lengths. The motor weighs 24 lbs (10.89 kg) while the battery checks in at 19.4 lbs (8.80 kg). Retail price is $1,999 with a 1276Wh battery.
