Results of the World’s First Electric-Boat Race

With 23 entries competing over three days, the world’s first electric-boat regatta took place from May 29 to June 5 in Venice, Italy, as part of the Venice Boat Show. The weekend started with a parade of electrically powered boats from refitted Venice classics to the latest high-tech raceboats as the fleet idled from the Arsenale, along the Grand Canal out into the San Marco Basin and then back to their starting point. Formula 40 Performance Cruiser

Brilliant Finish — Easily Maintained

It could be argued that Formula could be credited with starting the “easier boating” trend with models like its 40 Performance Cruiser. The company was one of the first to adopt joystick operation and as pretty as the specially formulated polyurethane paint over the Maxguard gelcoat is, it’s also easier to maintain. Intrepid 475 Panacea

Outboard Choices for a Custom Experience

One benefit of being an independent boatbuilder is that Intrepid can offer the 47’6” (14.48 m) 475 Panacea with outboards from Suzuki, Mercury or Yamaha. Quad Suzuki DF350As would give the boat impressive slow-speed maneuverability because they’re the only outboards with twin contra-rotating propellers in class. We tested with quad 425-hp Yamaha XTO offshores and hit 60.7 mph. Imagine what she’d do with quad 450-hp Mercury Racing 450Rs. Taking a look at the BoatTEST.com outboard matrix, a potential buyer would see that the 450R weighs 689 lbs. (312.52 kg) compared to the Yamaha 425 at 952 lbs. (432 kg). On the other hand, the Yamaha doesn’t need a supercharger to develop its horsepower. More...
