Formula Boats was founded in 1962 by the legendary Don Aronow in Miami, Florida. The yard gained almost immediate recognition with the creation of the original 233 deep-V hull. Its aggressive geometry proved ideal for handling rough offshore conditions, quickly becoming one of the most imitated designs in maritime history. In 1964, Formula was acquired by Alliance Machine and Foundry and joined forces with Thunderbird, a company founded in 1956 by Woody Woodson. Further corporate development unfolded in 1969 when Atlanta-based conglomerate Fuqua Industries acquired both Thunderbird and Formula, continuing the brand's operational growth.

Starting at 345,000 square feet with 600 staff, the facility underwent two major expansions—including a significant extension in 2006—to reach its current 575,000-square-foot footprint.
