By Gabrielle Lazaridis
Hanse Explorer
Length: 48m
Distance traveled: 17,625nm
With her high commercial ice classification, refined interiors and on-board expedition team, Hanse Explorer remains one of the most popular charter yachts in Antarctica. She was delivered in 2006 by German shipyard Fassmer and then extensively refitted in 2021, which saw an all-encompassing redesign with contemporary interiors, brand new exterior spaces and zero-speed fin stabilizers. On board highlights include a hot tub, cabana-style Bali beds on the sundeck for sleeping under the stars in warmer climates and a sauna and new gym for an added blast of wellness.
While Hanse Explorer is known for its polar adventures, this year (2024) saw the vessel venture to some new areas such as the Chilean Fjords and Papua New Guinea. The yacht even ventured out to Point Nemo, the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, which sits 1,400 nautical miles from any coastline. According to the yacht's captain, the occasion marked the first recorded visitor in the area.
