Hatteras M60

Its Smallest Motoryacht is Bigger than Most

While the Hatteras M60 is the smallest motoryacht in the company’s line, when we compare her to other 60-footers on the market, and even some 62-footers, we find that she is the real thing. What do we mean? Displacement says it all: Her dry weight is 87,700 lbs. (39,870 kgs.) Other 60' boats (18.28 m) on the market are from 8,000 lbs. to 31,000 lbs. (3,636 to 14,090 kg) less – and the rest are between those two numbers. When it comes to beam, the M60 has from 1’7” to 2’2” (.48 to .88 m) more. Finally, when it comes to fuel capacity, the real barometer of what the builder intended the yacht to do, she has a 1,200 gal. (4,542 L) fuel capacity – 60% or more compared to other motoryachts on the market.

Hatteras has never been known for brash designs, but the brand has always been respected for its build quality, reliability and seaworthiness. But that comes at a price: she will be slower with the same power, and more costly because there is just more material in her. To learn more...

Fairline Targa 45 GT

Engine Access Belies Sleek Looks

On initial inspection, it would not be difficult to look at the Fairline Targa 45 GT’s sleek appearance and assume that it would not be fun to be the technician who needs to maintain the engines. Low-profile express yachts are not known for their spacious engine and equipment rooms. Fairline provides a hatch in the port side of the sun pad that offers minimal access to the port side of the port engine. Open the tender garage, however, and the deck lifts on an electrically actuated strut to expose the whole compartment, providing nearly unlimited access. More...

Outboard Engine Buyers' Guide

Tohatsu MFS75

A Strong Candidate for Repowering

All the big-name manufacturers offer a 75-hp outboard, but one that most will overlook is the Tohatsu MFS75. And that could be a mistake when someone is looking at an engine for repowering. The Tohatsu is built on a 2.0-liter powerhead, produces 41 amps of electric power and comes with a 5-year warranty. Check it out on the Outboard Engine Buyers’ Guide comparison table. More...

Sailfish 360 CC

Same as the Others with One Big Difference

Sailfish – just like most other builders of center consoles – is trying to make its boats “family-friendly.” That usually amounts to putting backrests on the forward seating, more padding on the jump seats and a light in the head. Sailfish has done all those things on the 360 CC but added one more feature that is more important than all of the others – higher freeboard to keep the green water out and a deeper cockpit to keep the passengers in. Aviara AV32

Power Choices Broaden Utility

Aviara offers its AV32 day boat with sterndrive or outboard power. The sterndrive version is about 500 lbs. (227 kg) heavier and features power from Ilmor Marine, a full swim platform and can be equipped with a hydraulic swim platform. We could see this version being more popular on big freshwater lakes and rivers. The outboard version is available with engines from Mercury total up to 700 hp. Either way, joystick piloting puts the captain in control around the docks. More...

New York Yacht Club “Pausing”

Its America’s Cup Pursuit

Yesterday the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, Christopher J. Culver, notified club members that it was “pausing its pursuit of the America’s Cup.” This is big news in the sailing world because the America’s Cup is regarded as the premier event in sailboat racing. The NYYC is also the yacht club most closely associated with the Cup because of its stewardship and possession of it for more than 125 years. More...

It’s About Time to Stop

the America’s Cup Madness

Currently, it is estimated that it costs well over $100 million to defend or mount a challenge for the America’s Cup. For example, some estimate that Larry Ellison spent from $250-$300 million for his defense of the America’s Cup eight years ago. What was once a Corinthian yacht race that was a contest of wits and sailing prowess has become an industry that is more a contest of who can raise the most money. More...

NMEA 2000 Sensor: Furuno SCX-20 Satellite Compass

Using four separate GNSS antennas for fast response times, the Furuno SCX-20 Satellite compass raises the bar for reliability and accuracy. Traditionally, a satellite compass calculates heading using a single baseline between two antennae. The SCX-20’s quad units can calculate the information using any of the six baselines drawn among the four of them. That’s why the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) named the SCX-20 the winner in its NMEA 2000 Sensor category in its 2021 Awards program. More...
