Hydrogen-Powered Yacht Makes its Debut

The New Era is a 40’ (12.19 m) yacht built by Hynova Boat and she’s powered by hydrogen propulsion.

Billed as the world’s first hydrogen-powered yacht, the 40’ New Era from Hynova Boat made its debut in Monaco in the last week of September at the Planetary Health Week Capital Yachting Experience.

Silent Propulsion

The boat is the first to be equipped with an electric engine powered by the latest generation Toyota fuel cell in collaboration with Energy Observer Developments and its REXH2 solution. The concept of green hydrogen consists of generating electricity from a renewable source. The electricity is then separated from oxygen and used to fuel the vessel. The hydrogen is obtained through electrolysis of water. Hynova uses a silent electric engine driven by the hydrogen stored on board New Era as a fuel source.

The New Era was designed with a focus on passenger capacity and open spaces.

Hynova’s CEO Chloé Zaied designed the new boat handle choppy water and complicated weather. She has no cabin because the company wanted to focus on using on-deck space for entertainment, amenities and storage. The hardtop covers a third of the boat, including the helm. It includes an electrically powered sunroof.

Another version of the boat features a hardtop.

The yacht can accommodate up to 12 passengers and she emits only water and zero carbon dioxide. Hynova has said that future models will be built with more sustainable materials that “wherever possible” would be bio-sourced and made in France.
