June Tied with Third Hottest Month on Record

This chart from NOAA shows noteworthy weather events related to heat.

The earth’s warming trend continued in June, making the month the third hottest on record and tying a mark set in 2015. Warm temperatures for the year to date make 2020 the second hottest in the 141-year climate record according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Above Average Temps Boost Sales

As reported by the Trade Only Today newsletter, last month was the 44th consecutive June and the 426th consecutive month with temperatures climbing above average. Nine of the 10 warmest Junes have occurred since 2010, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

The average global temperature in June was 1.66 degrees Fahrenheit (0.92 degrees C) above the 20th century average of 59.9 degrees F (15.5 degrees C), tying with 2015 as the third-highest June temperature in the 141-year record. Only June 2016 and June 2019 were hotter.

On a plus side, dealers said the soaring temperatures drove positive sales. “They have been a big boost to boat sales,” Rob Soucy, president of Port Harbor Marine, which has five locations in Maine. “You couldn’t have asked for a better June, weather-wise.”

For many dealers, the first two months of the summer of 2020 have set records.

He said that sales activities for the last 2 ½ months have been “unprecedented.” He added, “The number of leads coming in, the number of dollars we’ve written in May and June — (they were) two back-to-back record-setting months in terms of new written deals.”
