A Look at Azzam, the World’s Largest Superyacht

She was not only costly to build, the yearly maintenance cost of the vessel is reported to be around $65 million. Needless to say, only one of the richest people on this planet can afford such a personal toy. This one was owned, not so surprisingly perhaps, by the late President of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The beautiful exterior design of Azzam comes from Milan-based studio Nauta Design. Construction began at the Lürssen yard in 2010 and was completed in 2013. Reportedly some 4000 people were involved in the build.

She has a beam of 20.8 meters (68.2’), draft of 4.3 meters (14.1’), and weighs 13,136 GT. She reportedly can accommodate up to 36 guests in 18 cabins and a crew of 60 to 80.

She has an onboard golf training facility in addition to a gym and swimming pool.

Azzam was designed to be one of the fastest superyachts in the world, with a reported top speed of 32 knots.

She’s powered by an astonishing 97,000 horsepower generated by two monster gasoline engines and two huge diesels driving four jet pumps. At full bore, she is said to burn 13 tons of fuel per hour—no report on her fuel capacity but it must be massive!

The interior of Azzam is predictably opulent, as well, with vast entertainment areas taking full advantage of her broad beam.

The two conventional diesel engines are for long-distance voyaging and extended range and are efficient enough to allow Azzam to cross the Atlantic without refueling, per the builder.
