Groundbreaking Eco-Cruising

German shipyard, Lürssen, has marked a significant moment in the future of yachting with the official launch of the 114.2-meter superyacht Cosmos. This vessel stands apart globally, being among the very first to successfully incorporate cutting-edge fuel-cell technology into its propulsion system.

Lürssen installed a dual system of 500kW methanol fuel cells at the request of the owner. This innovation permits Cosmos to cruise silently and cleanly at speeds up to seven knots, boasting a significant eco-range of 1,000 nautical miles. Crucially, as the fuel-cell application is still a prototype, the yacht retains its full complement of conventional diesel generators, engines, and tanks, allowing for standard internal combustion operation when the clean power is not engaged.

The sheer scale and engineering of the vessel left an undeniable impression on the builder. Lürssen CEO Peter Lürssen emphasized the yacht’s importance, stating: "While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history." He confirmed, "Cosmos is undoubtedly one of those yachts." Delivery is currently slated for 2026.

Design and Features

The exterior of the six-deck Cosmos presents a distinct, long-range explorer-style profile, a design conceived by Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, known for his work on the 139.7-meter Solaris.

The most eye-catching feature on the yacht is its commitment to maximizing views through glass. Foremost is the large, spherical glass dome serving as a private owner’s study, which is ingeniously connected to an external terrace. To achieve an undisturbed 360-degree panoramic vista from this dome, Lürssen had to develop a custom solution for bending large sections of thick glass.

This transparent theme is carried throughout the upper levels. A continuous glass band wraps entirely around the cabin deck, ensuring occupants have uninterrupted sightlines. Further forward in the bow, beneath the helipad, lies a dedicated glass-encased observation lounge. Aft, an open balcony with a glass balustrade offers views over the main deck. The aft deck highlights its readiness for adventure, featuring a spectacular swimming pool and Jacuzzi area that connects to a specialized dry dock.
