MAN to Launch New V8 IMO Tier III Engines

Munich, Germany-based MAN Engines has announced firm plans to launch a new series of V8 yacht engines at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival, scheduled to run September 12-17 at the Vieux Port and Port Canto. The new engines, equipped with an SCR catalytic converter, extend the company’s existing lineup of product with IMO Tier III certification.

MAN Engines says its new IMO Tier III V8 product will allow the firm to satisfy demand for lower emission propulsion options across a wider range of vessels

The new marine V8s, including models in the 1,000hp to 1,300hp (735kW to 956kW) range, join MAN’s existing line of V12 IMO Tier III products to bring lower-emission options to a wider range of vessels, according to MAN Engines head of sales, Reiner Rössner. “By expanding the portfolio to include additional V8 engines in IMO Tier III, we are simplifying our customers’ business,” he said, “while expanding sales opportunities for additional boat series and to additional markets.”

The new engines are said to be approved for use with regenerative diesel, also known as hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO). End-user customers can either blend HVO with conventional diesel fuel or use it as a full replacement in order to reduce GHG emissions in exhaust gas by up to 90%.

The new engines are further said to deliver fuel efficiency improvements in the range of 3% to 8%.

“By using an SCR catalytic converter, our engines can be operated with higher raw emissions, which reduces fuel consumption. The pollutants that are not reduced internally, in this case, are reduced here by external exhaust gas after-treatment,” explained MAN Engines head of engineering, Werner Kübler.

“At the same time, complex exhaust gas recirculation and bulky and heavy components such as diesel particulate filters and oxidation catalysts can be dispensed with. This is crucial for reducing system complexity and realizing cost savings.”

The company will unveil its new V8 engine range at its Jetee 177 display stand.
