Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

New Flagship Sets a High Bar

Boston Whaler’s new 420 Outrage is the venerated company’s way of celebrating 50 years of its Outrage lineup. Since 1971, this series has constantly set the bar for safety, functionality and expert engineering. Being the flagship of the line means being at the forefront. We haven't yet tested the boat but of course, the engineers at Whaler have. They tell us she goes fastest (63.7 mph) with quad 450s wound up to nearly 6500 rpm. With the triple 600s, she tops out at 59.4 mph. But speed is not the big story of this boat. Her cabin has 7’ (2.13 m) of headroom and a wraparound banquet with a teak table that drops down to make a berth, a mini galley and an enclosed wet head. In the bow is another entertaining area with table. Aft she has a bench seat behind the helm that triples as a leaning post and mezzanine seating facing aft – and there's another fold-up seat at the transom with table. There is much more worth seeing, if for no other reason than to steal some of Whaler's good ideas. More...

Piloting Equipment

New Garmin Surround View Assisted Docking

This week Garmin International introduced its Surround View Camera System for recreational boats. It uses six cameras mounted on the sides of the boat that the company says act like multiple sets of eyes to provide a live 360-degree view. This is not a new concept, which means that it has proved itself in other applications such as cars, busses and cruise ships. So just as people back up their new cars by looking at a screen on the dash, boaters can now do the same when docking and be able to see each side as well as the stern. It eliminates the parallax view problem. More...

Installing a Necessary Windlass

Finding that perfect gunkhole to start a day of fun or getting ready for a spectacular sunset before heading back to the dock requires you to drop and set your anchor. While splashing it overboard is no big deal, getting it back up may be something else. An anchor windlass is the way to go. With sizes for almost every application, this important piece of equipment is well within reach of most boat owners. More...
