Fleming 78

She Looks Salty But How Far Will She Go?

For mariners planning trans-oceanic adventures the big question is how far will she go on a single load of fuel? To answer that important question we tested this vessel not once but twice to make sure our data took into account different conditions. Our test vessel was equipped with standard twin 1,550-hp MAN-V12 engines. Fleming offers options of twin 1,000-hp MAN-V8s or twin 800-hp MAN inline 6 engines. So, the first question an owner must answer is whether to have relatively small twin engines working hard or two large ones loping along. Find some answers here...

Boating Tip

A Prop Guard Can Provide Protection

The red prop guard is for engines up to 100 hp and because of the immense drag, the boat can’t run faster than 25 mph with them.

In a typical year, according to the United States Coast Guard’s annual recreational boating accident statistics, there are about 187 propeller injuries and 19 propeller fatalities. Experienced boaters know that the business end of a marine engine is a dangerous thing, just as, say, is a fast-moving car hurtling down the highway – and that’s why people must stay away from both. Chase boats used for sailing schools or other in-water activities usually employ propeller guards because of the proximity of inexperienced children or swimmers not familiar with boats and what props can do.  Proponents of guards say that they add a potential margin of safety in certain applications. ABYC Standards For Gas Fuel Lines

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) is the source of technical information for the international marine industry. Among their other activities, ABYC sets the standards for product safety. Given the volatility of gasoline and all that using the fuel entails, strict guidelines must be met in order to keep boaters safe while on the water. More...
