Fountain 34SC:

Very Fast w/Prodigious Range

The Fountain Powerboats name is synonymous with performance, whether it’s on an offshore race course or a center-console bound for the canyons. We tested the 34SC with power provided by triple 300-hp Mercury outboards. Our test boat hit a top speed of 68.2 mph. We recorded best cruise at 34.3 mph and 3500 rpm, where she had a range of 551 statute miles/479 nmiles. But, with just a slight penalty in range (6 nmiles), she can travel at 42.7 mph/37.1 knots with a range of 545 smiles/473 nmiles. This is prodigious range for a boat this size at any speed. The company has expanded its list of compatible engine controls to include MTU CAN bus, Yanmar VC20 (Yanmar’s newest CAN bus controls) and Twin Disc EC300 Digital Control Head (Twin Disc’s new CAN bus system). We’re told that she is sold out for the next 10 months or so, with the next production slot available in the summer of next year. Powered by quad Mercury 600s, she is certainly state-of-the-art for outboard power, and when it comes to an all-around watersports platform, she’s hard to beat. Riviera’s 64 Sports Motor Yacht is one of the few boats in this size range with an enclosed flying bridge. The question of where an “enclosed flying bridge” ends and a “skylounge” begins, is blurred somewhat in this Riviera vessel because her layout has two couches. When Torque Hits the Road

Proponents of diesel outboards love to talk about torque—and with good reason. The Cox 300 is rated at 300 hp, but it also puts out 479 ft. lbs. of torque. By comparison, the 425-hp Yamaha XTO Offshore produces 403 ft. lbs. However, if torque can’t be transferred to the water, it’s wasted. The Cox diesel has a single prop to transfer its greater torque, but the Yamaha has dual props and twice the number of blades to transfer its torque to the water.
