Fountaine-Pajot MY 40:

Easy-Riding, 2 Large Staterooms

fountaine-pajot_my40_021020.jpg

Fountaine-Pajot MY 40

Some power catamarans have limited space below decks for accommodations, but check out the Fountaine-Pajot MY 40, a French-built cat that offers expansive space both topside and below thanks to her 19’11” (5.96 m) beam. The starboard hull holds a VIP stateroom with a head, and on the port side is the master stateroom with an expansive head. To starboard is a crew cabin with bunks and head that can be a third guest cabin. But the real story of this vessel is topside with lots of real estate for entertaining. There is a lower helm to starboard with companion seating. The twin 370-hp Volvo Penta IPS500s are easy on fuel at displacement speeds. At 1000 rpm and 5.6 knots, she burned just 2 gph in our tests for a range over 900 NM. She can get to port quickly when necessary, with a top speed of 21.3 mph. Her soundproofing keeps things quiet throughout the rpm range, recording just 71 dBa at the helm at WOT. As with most cats, she offers impressive beam stability and an easy ride in choppy seas. Grand Banks 60:

Setting a New Benchmark in Trawlers

gb_60_021020.jpg

Grand Banks 60

After single-handedly creating the trawler market 70 years ago, Grand Bank's owners lost the plot over the years, abdicating leadership in class to brands, many of which improved on the breed. But today, with new owners and management, Grand Banks is back with a vengeance, giving us what many have been waiting decades for. World-famous sailboat racer Mark Richards presides over Grand Banks as CEO these days, and his time at the pinnacle of offshore sailboat racing has given him a perspective that few people in the powerboat business have. The result is the new Grand Banks 60, which gently modernizes the traditional GB exterior, maintains the brand’s penchant for lavish teak below, but then brings the vessel into the 21st century with materials, construction methods, and hull shape. Rather than adding bigger engines or more fuel capacity, Richards insisted on attaining speed and efficiency from the hull shape and light weight. The finish may look traditional and keep with Grand Banks DNA, but deep down we find a lightweight carbon fiber superstructure and keen attention to weight distribution over the new hull. More...

Absolute 47 Fly:

Form Follows Function,

Adding Interior Volume

absolute_47fly_021020.jpg

Absolute 47 Fly

Form truly does follow function in the Absolute 47 Fly, where the broad, nearly vertical bow design adds impressive volume in the forward en suite master. The floor has no steps needed to climb into bed, and the large windows provide lots of light during the day. The angled location of the bed provides added space at the bow and on the port side for storage cabinets. Portholes on either side provide fresh air when needed, and there’s a fold-up vanity with a mirror at the bow peak. The VIP amidships, which is large enough to be a second master, also has direct access to a head that is shared with the guest stateroom. All staterooms have sliding pocket doors and both the master and VIP have lighted, walk-in closets. More...

Monte Carlo Debuts the 70 Skylounge

at the Miami Yacht Show

Monte Carlo Debuts the 70 Skylounge at the Miami Yacht Show

The fully-enclosed and climate-controlled MCY Skylounge models, including the 66, 70, 76 and 80, move the main helm topside, leaving the forward portion of the ship’s house available for added main deck living and entertainment areas. In the new MCY 70, the added space is used for a formal dining area for eight with enough square footage left over to fit a day head, which is always a plus on the main deck. Topside, the sliding sunroof found in the open bridge model is also available in the Skylounge edition. The added square footage in the topside salon provides an all-weather entertainment venue with the best view on the yacht. See the new MCY 70 Skylounge at the Miami Yacht Show at Dock B, Slip 68. We like the concept of the Skylounge because it adds a significant amount of all-season living space at a relatively low cost. To view BoatTEST's report on the Skylounge, click here...

Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP:

Direct Injection, Fuel-Efficient, Lower Cost

evinrude_300_020420.jpg

Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP

There is a reason why virtually all modern automobile engines have direct, in-the-cylinder, fuel injection – it is the most fuel efficient way to deliver power. There is only one outboard engine brand on the market with direct-in-the-cylinder injection – and that is the Evinrude G2. Little wonder, then, that it is the most fuel-efficient outboard on the market, using ICOMIA standards. Forty percent of the engine hours on outboards are spent at idle. It is there that the Evinrude G2 engines are two to three times more efficient than any 4-stroke on the market – because it is the only one that has direct-injection. There are fewer parts to maintain since there are no valves, cams, or timing chains. Electrical power is generated through a beltless magneto rather than an alternator as in all competing engines. No dealer-scheduled maintenance is required for five years or 500 hours, and oil changes are never required. This saves thousands of dollars in required dealer maintenance over the course of the engine’s life. The system also results in exceptionally clean operation, earning the engine a 3-Star CARB rating. gw-helm_021020.jpg

The Grady-White Canyon 456 has a joystick control for close-quarters maneuvering with quad outboards.
