Even though state parks in New Jersey have been closed because of the COVID-19 virus, Lake Hopatcong will remain open to boating and fishing as long as enthusiasts remain responsible. Fishing from boats, riding personal watercraft and participating in wake sports will not result in a visit by the police, local officials said yesterday.

However, authorities will not look kindly on boats rafting up or people gathering in large groups. Law enforcement, including New Jersey State Police, State Park Police and Conservation Police will enforce social distancing and the maximum loads on state waters.

“We regret very much that it has become necessary to close our state parks and forests at the time,” said Department of Environmental Protection commissioner Catherine R. McCabe.
