Mercury Marine's 600-HP V12 Verado

Takes Dead Aim at 40’+ Boats

Screen Shot 2021-03-08 at 5.10.39 PM.png

Launched in 2013, the Sea Ray 37’ (11.27 m) Venture was powered by two Mercury

300-hp Verados.

The most researched 30-something express cruiser on BoatTEST.com from 2013 to 2015 was the Sea Ray 37’ (11.27 m) Venture. People loved the fact that she was powered by outboards and had a large mid-cabin with a diagonal queen berth. She also weighed 16,703 lbs. (7,546 kg) and that was the rub – as is obvious in the test data printed above. She needed more horsepower and Mercury Marine didn’t have an outboard powerful enough. Now, with the 600-hp V12 Verado, boats in the 23,000-lb. (10,454 kg) range can top-out at 60 mph and easily lope along in the 40s.

With more than two dozen brands building scores of express cruisers and large luxury crossover dayboats – most powered by diesel engines in the 400-hp range – the new V12 in twin, triple and quad applications can take on diesel power at competitive costs and performance, provide a lot of interior room and lower maintenance expenses as a bonus.

To find out exactly what Mercury Marine has in mind, we recently interviewed Chris Drees, president of Mercury Marine. He shot it to us straight. And, since he is privy to boatbuilders’ plans, he tells us some exciting new boats are in store. See his vision here...

New Captain's Report

Fleming Yachts 85:

New Enclosed Flying Bridge

fleming-85-0308.png

Fleming Yachts 85

The new Fleming 85 is the first motoryacht from the company with a fully enclosed flying bridge. When an owner chooses this configuration, there are three captain’s chairs plus a lounge and a table on a raised platform in the enclosed pilothouse. The views are spectacular, and this station is the only full helm on the 85. For those dithering over weather to order one of these new long-range motoryachts, then our suggestion is to quickly reserve a place in line. Fleming already has a waiting list and can only build a few each year. She will be a classic and out-live most of the Baby Boomers drawn to her. More...

Everglades 273CC:

More Efficient w/Bigger Engines

everglades-273cc-0308.png

Everglades 273CC

We tested the Everglades 273CC with twin 250-hp Yamaha outboards and hit a top speed of 51.5 mph. We recorded best cruise at 32.1 MPH. Everglades also offers the 273CC with twin 300-hp Yamahas and, as expected, in the manufacturer’s tests, the boat ran a faster top speed of 57 mph. But the 300s are also better on gas getting a maximum range of 278 miles. For the angler who wants the range, the upgrade to 300s could be worth it. More...

Aviara AV32:

Premium Day Boat w/Helm to Match

aviara-av32-0308.jpg

Aviara AV32

The Aviara AV32 is a luxury day boat that’s loaded with upscale amenities like a Klipsch stereo and all glass dash. A 10” (25.40 cm) screen to the left is vertically positioned and has digital switching for all the vessel’s systems. The center 12” (30.48 cm) Garmin display is for navigation and the 7” (17.78 cm) panel to the right is for engine diagnostics. To ensure the helm has the feel that should come with a luxury boat, the joystick that controls the Ilmor Marine One Drive has Anchor, Location, Position, and Heading Assist. One thing no one will feel is the drive shifting in and out of gear because it does so hydraulically. More...
