Key West 203DFS:

Evinrude 3-Cylinder 150 Gives

Quick Acceleration

keywest_203dfs_011320.jpg

Key West 203DFS

Three-cylinder outboards are very much in the cards as the automotive industry is increasingly adopting them for their lightest-weight vehicles. Evinrude was the first outboard maker to introduce a 3-cylinder platform last year, and so we tested it, paying close attention to vibration and acceleration. Fuel economy is almost a given with direct in-the-cylinder fuel injection and three cylinders. We found her to have no more noticeable vibration than 4-cylinder models from other brands. The Key West 203DFS we tested was powered by the new Evinrude E-TEC G2 Pro 150, which is the lightest in class at 433 lbs. (196 kg). The 150 Mercury Pro XS is listed at 456 lbs. (207 kg) and the lightest Yamaha 150 is listed at 478 lbs. (217 kg). She is even lighter than these numbers indicate because Yamaha and Mercury have external steering systems that are not counted in the engine weight. The result was a time to plane of 3.6 seconds, turning an Evinrude RX-3 21” (53 cm) pitch propeller, and a top speed of 49.9 mph. Best cruise was at 3500 rpm and 27.3 mph at which she got 5.0 mpg. Slow her down to a trolling speed of 3.6 mph and the economy jumps to an incredible 18.0 mpg. More...

Sirena Yachts 64:

Luxury Cruiser w/Range,

Comfort & Premium Fit-and-Finish

sirenayachts_64_011320.jpg

Sirena Yachts 64

The Sirena Yachts 64 is built to CE Class A standards, which means she is built to navigate the open ocean in Force 8 wind and seas higher than 13' (4 m). Extensive use of Kevlar in the superstructure and flying bridge keep the center of gravity low, which combined with the 19’3” (5.86 m) beam and the Seakeeper 16 gyro, should provide help dampening roll in beam seas. She has the range for open sea crossings at displacement speeds. With her twin 1000-hp Cat C12.9s dialed back to 1000 rpm and 9.5 knots, her 1,321-gallon (5,001 kg) fuel capacity gives her a range of over 940 NM. She can run at better than 27 knots in a pinch. While at 80 percent throttle and 1800 rpm, she ran 20.3 knots and got 0.4 nmpg for a range of just under 500 NM. More...

Sailfish 360 CC:

Soft-Riding Center Console

Sailfish 360 CC

Our surveys of our BoatTEST members who own Sailfish boats indicate that the owners like the ride, which they say is one of the boat’s major features as far as they’re concerned. The bottom is a Variable Deadrise Stepped (VDS) hull design for which the company is noted – see our report for the details. She is designed to run a bit bow high as can be seen in the image above, which keeps her dry. The Sailfish 360 CC has 4’7” (1.4 m) of freeboard forward, at rest, much higher on the run, which gives her authority in offshore slop. The company says she has the greatest interior depth of any boat in class. More...

Azimut Atlantis 51:

Compact Helm w/Good Visibility

azimut_atlantis51_011320.jpg

Azimut Atlantis 51

The helm of the Azimut Atlantis 51 is relatively compact, providing more access for entry to the dinette, galley and the staterooms below decks. However, it’s fully-equipped with a joystick as well as bow thruster controls and a complement of systems monitoring and nav screens. Dual high-backed, wraparound bucket seats with upgraded Batyline breathable upholstery give the helmsman and lookout lots of comfort and a distinctive look. She has a massive single-piece windshield with a clean, mullion-free design that provides an unobstructed view for the helmsman and adds to the modernistic style of this Italian-built express. The glass is kept clear by four defrosting vents. A sliding side window and a powered sunroof provide natural ventilation when desired, but there are also A/C vents on the console. More...

How Many Handholds Do Boats Need – And Where?

nmma-handhold_011320.jpg

Handholds attached at the helm on a center console ensure that the crew has a place to hold onto when conditions get rough.

Handholds and grabrails are in place to help keep boaters and passengers in their seats - or on deck when conditions get rough. But how many handholds are sufficient? Where should they be located on the boat? The ABYC has a standard that spells out the size, strength, and position for each type. NMMA-certified boats must meet it. Learn more about this key safety feature here. More...
