The owner of the 52’ (15.85 m) long North Pacific Yachts 49 Euro Pilothouse that we tested upgraded the engine to a 600-hp Cummins QSC 8.3L inboard that pushed the boat to a speed of 11.3 knots at 2850 rpm. At a more typical speed for a long-range cruiser, we recorded 7.3 knots and a fuel burn of 4.0 gph at 1500 rpm, which worked out to a range of 1,521 nautical miles. The 2019 USCG reauthorization bill requires a mandatory kill switch to be worn by the operator of recreational powerboats less than 26’ (7.92 m) if a kill switch is present.
