The Plague, Boating, and Early Ordering

renaissance-111720.png

Recreational boating got started in the aftermath of the great 14th-century plague, as wealthy people got out of their houses for safe social distancing. Images from the Book of Hours, 1530-40.

On March 30th, we published an article predicting “a remarkable renaissance” in boating as the result of COVID-19. This summer, that came to pass for the same reason recreational boating got started. It was a natural result of the great European plague of 1347 that killed a third of the European population. Not surprisingly, wealthy people were largely able to survive because they could afford the social distancing of large houses, estates, and boating for recreation.

This summer saw the largest boat buying boom in memory. Severe cabin fever, safe social distancing and the absence of alternatives were the primary reasons. Plus, money normally spent on expensive summer vacations were used instead for down payments on boats. Little wonder that both new and good used boats continue to be in heavy demand.

For those thinking about boating next summer, we suggest planning ahead and placing orders now for spring and summer delivery. Boats are largely hand-built, which takes time. Only limited numbers will be available, so ordering early is advisable. Otherwise, as was the case this summer, the only boats available will be the ones least popular.

For those who missed our “plague” article last March explaining how it changed Western Civilization, we will give you a second chance – here...
