New York is Open For Boating
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said that New Yorkers can go boating. There will be some changes such as public restrooms being closed and launches at state campgrounds will remain closed. Additionally, any programs intended to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species will remain in place.
Staying Safe
When on the water, the DEC recommends that New Yorkers avoid crowded areas and follow the guidelines on the DEC website about boating and fishing responsibly, including maintaining 6’ (1.83 m) between boats. Life jackets are required on boats less than 21' (6.40 m) long and dressing in layers is recommended to avoid hypothermia. Additionally, under a new law, all operators of motorized vessels must take a safe boating course and earn a certificate by 2025.
Docks Being Installed
DEC and State Park employees have been installing docks at parks in advance of the opening days for two fishing seasons. The first day of walleye fishing is May 2 and the season for bass starts June 20. The installations will continue as the DEC and Office of Parks, Recreational and Historic Preservation are encouraging New Yorkers to engage in responsible recreation during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
