How was your 2024 season?

It was fantastic. We managed to sail 4,000 nautical miles in almost five full months on board. We decided a long time ago that the Mediterranean in summer is the most beautiful sea for holidays. We have been all over, including Bizerte in Tunisia, which is a well-organised and duty-free bunkering point.

Where else did you go?

Following Tunisia, we went to Corfu, Zakynthos, Crete and a host of other beautiful islands on the way to Bodrum. We stopped at the super-luxurious marina in Yalıkavak on the Bodrum Peninsula. We didn’t know what to expect of this facility but we were very impressed and I’d recommend it thoroughly to anyone thinking about cruising in Turkey.

On the way back west, we made our obligatory stop in Capri, where I lived for a time after the Second World War. We had a lot of great sailing days this year, but we’re always happy to head home to be reunited with our normal life. Over winter, we love snow sports.

How long have you owned Freedom?

We took ownership in 2015. We collected her from San Diego. She’s a spectacular vessel, designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Picchiotti for Bill Simon, who was the US Secretary of the Treasury in the 1970s.
