Scania Sea Trials Viking 46 w/New Engines

The Viking 46 Billfish with Scania DI13 diesels was commissioned by Mack Boring & Parts Co., a Scania dealer.

Diesel-engine manufacturer Scania recently completed sea trials on a 46’ (14.02 m) Viking Billfish sportfishing yacht (46BF) called Mack 900. She was launched on June 2 and is powered by twin 900-hp Scania DI13 in-line six-cylinder engines and was commissioned by Mack Boring & Parts Co., a Scania dealer.

“We’re very impressed with the performance of the Scania engines during our sea trials,” Anthony Scola, international sales manager for Viking Yacht Company, said. “Their light weight, power and fuel efficiency is immediately apparent.”

Pat McGovern, president of Mack Boring & Parts Co., called the 46BF “a perfect hull to show how well the Scania engines perform.”

Scania engines are designed and built with light weight and efficiency in mind.

Scania said it tested the boat with full fuel and water and she hit a top speed of 41.5 knots at 2300 rpm. From 1800 through 2200, she averaged more than a knot per gallon, which should give the boat a good range.

Competition Ready

Mack 900 was scheduled to make her tournament debut in the Beach Haven White Marlin Invitational in Beach Haven, N.J., on August 11 and then take part in the MidAtlantic Tournament starting August 15. Additional appearances include the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October.

Built on a compacted graphite iron block and using a wastegate turbocharger, the Scania DI13 is a straightforward design that the manufacturer says delivers high performance without needing additional turbos or superchargers. Scania uses a proprietary engine management system and common-rail extra high-pressure fuel injection.
