Sharrow MX-V™ Props for 2-Stroke Engines

Sharrow Propeller

The new Sharrow MX-V props were expressly designed and made for 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, for inline 4-cylinder 200-hp engines and lower horsepower, all the way down to 40-hp. In this report, we will focus on the advantages of “repowering” your boat with the MX-V props.

“Re-Power” With Sharrow Props – And Save

If you’re ready to buy a new boat because your 2-stroke engine and boat are old, or you’re thinking about getting a new 4-stroke engine and putting it on your old boat, we have one question:  Have you checked the prices of new outboard engines lately, much less boats?

The best solution for you may be to “repower” by “re-propping” with a new Sharrow MX-V propeller.

The Sharrow MX-V™ props incorporate all the well-documented benefits of the Sharrow MX series, including far greater fuel efficiency, smoother operation, better control when docking, improved high-speed handling, and significantly quieter performance.

A 4-Stroke Outboard on a 2-Stroke Boat?

Designers of boats intended for 2-stroke outboard power took into account the relatively light weight and their tremendous torque at the low end of the RPM range. Repowering such a boat with a much heavier 4-stroke engine with very low torque at the low end, is often not a good marriage.  If you have ever seen an outboard boat mushing along with its bow high in the air, struggling to get on plane, chances are that was an old boat designed for a 2-stroke engine, but now fitted with a 4-stroke outboard for “improved performance.”

If you own a boat with a 2-stroke engine, we think your best course of action for improved performance and fuel economy, may well be to consider re-popping with an MX-V. Let’s consider the possible benefits.

Make 2-Stroke Engines Fuel Efficient

One of the biggest drawbacks of 2-stroke engines is that they are typically 5% to 35% less fuel-efficient than 4-stroke engines, depending on the model, brand, and year. Because Sharrow props can improve fuel efficiency by 20% to 40% in the mid-RPM range—where most boats operate—the savings for 2-stroke engines can be substantial, effectively putting them on par with even gen-3 4-stroke models.

Save the Weight

The good news about the MX-V props is that they weigh only a little bit more than the prop that is already on the boat. Switching to a 4-stroke engine, as mentioned above, could cause big headaches because of their weight and low torque.

Less Vibration

Many owners of lower-horsepower 2-stroke engines, particularly those with tiller steering, traditionally complain about excessive vibration. Because Sharrow’s 3-blade props effectively behave like 6-blade props, they inherently produce less vibration—resulting in reduced operator fatigue.

Longer Lifespan

Because 2-stroke engines run at higher RPMs at low to moderate speeds, their lifespan is generally shorter than that of comparable 4-stroke engines. Sharrow props advance the boat farther with each 360-degree revolution of the prop, thus reducing the need to run the engine at high RPMs. Fewer revolutions and lower operating RPMs both contribute to longer engine life.

Far Greater Low-End Torque for Heavy Loads

2-stroke engines are known for strong low-end torque. Combine that with the Sharrow prop’s prodigious torque at low RPM, and the result is tremendous pulling power. This is especially useful in applications where boats must move heavy loads at low speeds, or even heavy loads at cruising speeds.

Noise Reduction

All outboard engines make noise, but 2-strokes have long been criticized for being louder—primarily because they operate at higher RPMs. Surprisingly, a Sharrow prop can significantly reduce perceived noise. This isn’t because the engine itself becomes quieter, but because the wake noise is reduced. The same benefit applies to 4-stroke engines equipped with Sharrow props.

Greater Resale Value

Vintage fiberglass boats powered by 2-stroke engines typically have lower resale value compared to those with 4-strokes. However, equipping a boat with a Sharrow prop can change the dynamics of a sale. A prospective buyer may be far more interested once they learn the boat includes this high-performance upgrade.

Props Available Off the Shelf

Hundreds of Sharrow MX-V props are currently in stock and ready to ship. According to the company, most orders can be shipped almost immediately -- great news for boaters eager to upgrade before summer.
