Sharrow MX-V™ Props for 4-Stroke Engines

Sharrow Propeller

40 HP to 200 HP Inline-4

The new Sharrow MX-V props were expressly designed and built for 4-stroke, inline 4-cylinder engines rated at 200 HP and below—and engines all the way down to 40 HP. They are also compatible with 2-stroke outboards. In this report, we focus on the advantages of “repowering” your boat’s 4-stroke engine with an MX-V prop.

“Re-Power” With Sharrow Props – And Save

If you’re ready to buy a new boat because your current 4-stroke engine and boat are showing their age—or you're thinking about replacing the engine—you might want to pause. Have you checked the price of new outboard engines lately? Much less new boats?

A better solution may be to “repower” by simply “re-propping” with a new Sharrow MX-V propeller.

The Sharrow MX-V™ props incorporate all the well-documented benefits of the Sharrow MX series, including significantly better fuel efficiency, smoother operation, more control when docking, improved high-speed handling, and quieter performance.

Old 4-Stroke Engines Are Old Technology

Over the last 25 to 35 years, virtually every outboard engine manufacturer has introduced new generations of their original 4-stroke engines. Honda was the first to introduce a 4-stroke outboard in the U.S., followed in the 1980s by Yamaha. In the mid-1990s, Mercury introduced its first 4-stroke engine, which used a Yamaha powerhead with a Mercury midsection and lower unit. In the trade, it was nicknamed the “Merc-a-ha.”

Mercury went on to release its first fully in-house 4-stroke—the Verado—in 2004. Since then, it has undergone three major upgrades before being completely replaced in 2018 by a naturally aspirated model.

In the last 25 years, all major engine makers have introduced second-generation 4-stroke platforms in the larger horsepower classes. These have always been major improvements over the previous models—many of which are still in the field.

Do you own one?

You Want Improved Performance

If you own a boat built before 2005 that was originally designed for a Yamaha or Mercury engine, there’s a good chance it was built for a lighter-weight, higher-torque 2-stroke—not the 4-stroke currently on it. If your boat is hard to get on plane—and the bow blocks your view forward in the process—buying a new 4-stroke engine probably won’t solve your problem.

If your boat was built after 2005, has your 4-stroke become “tired”? This usually shows up as slower speeds than before at the same RPM. It happens. A complete overhaul or a new engine is often the answer—but both are expensive.

Have you seen the prices of new outboard engines lately?

With prices ranging from $2,795 to $3,295, the Sharrow MX-V may be the most cost-effective solution—especially if you only plan to keep the boat for another 4 to 5 years.

More Fuel-Efficient in the Mid-Range

Because all Sharrow props advance the boat farther with each 360-degree prop revolution, they allow your 4-stroke to perform more efficiently. That often means you can get on plane at 3500 RPM instead of 4000. This is a typical result we see in side-by-side performance testing—and it translates into significant fuel savings.

Far Greater Low-End Torque for Heavy Loads

4-stroke engines are known for weak low-end torque. The Sharrow MX-V solves that with its revolutionary loop-blade design, which delivers prodigious torque—even on older 4-stroke engines, across all major brands and horsepower classes.

In tests we've conducted on larger cruising boats that struggled to get on plane, the Sharrow props consistently helped achieve plane 500 RPM sooner, with more consistent hold on the water at lower throttle for docking and backing.

Noise Reduction

All outboards make noise, but 4-strokes have long been criticized for having more mechanical chatter due to their complex internal parts. Surprisingly, Sharrow props can significantly reduce perceived noise—not because the engine itself is quieter, but because wake noise is dramatically reduced. Many owners say this is the most noticeable—and appreciated—benefit of a Sharrow prop.

All the Proven Sharrow Benefits

The new MX-V props offer all the benefits discovered over six years of field and lab testing, including:

  • Less vibration
  • Better high-speed control
  • More powerful reverse thrust
  • Easier docking due to better grip

Greater Resale Value

Equipping any boat with a Sharrow prop can dramatically improve its appeal to buyers. A prospective buyer will take notice when the boat comes with a high-performance, fuel-efficient upgrade already installed.
